50" Samsung DLP HL-P5063W 3 flashing lights Unreliable Start Up

Hey Guy's In addition to the other Tv I also picked up a 50" Samsung DLP TV Model HL-P5063W. Did some preliminary testing, and this video is basically explains whats happening. Without any Vibration though! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCKjRRWCndA

However, the Tv does seem to power up after trying for 3 times or So, and seems to run normally, I had it on for 30 minutes or So with no Issues. (Not sure if it might be a little dim, I am going to say it not though)

So I am assuming that it is one of these four things, Lamp, Ballast, Color Wheel, Or the Logic/Power Board. Anything else It could be?

Is there anyway to get more detailed information on the error or find how many hours the bulb has on it? When I am able to get the Tv on I Mean.

Now I took out the optic assembly and got to the color wheel and I don't see anything wrong with it All of the glass is there no chips broken pieces, and It seems to spin freely.

Is there anyway to check the Lamp and the Ballast? From my understanding the Lamp can still work, but cause this error. Is that Correct?

Finally, I am a little hesitant with this tv because all the videos on YouTube have a ton dust under the covers, and mine is Immaculate literally their is nothing, it's Immaculate, so I am assuming that I am not the first one working on it.

    Thanks a Million Guy's!

DLP's are very FUN to diagnose. I have no experience because I have missed out on the fun.

The ballast must work for the lamp to work. The ballast generates the multi-kV pulse to ignite the lamp, then starts passing 20-50V DC at several amps.

Is there a way to test the ballast?

Also, is there a way to read the Encoder on the color wheel and see if it is spinning up to 9000 Rpm and staying there. With another device?

Yes from the service menu. TV in standby: Info, Menu, Mute, Power (on remote control.)

I'm not sure but it should test for continuity.

              With a scope, probably.

OK I'll check that when I get home.

A universal Remote should work right? I press them all at once?

Do you know can the lamp still work but cause a error like this?

                  One after the another.

No experience with DLPs myself. So I don't know for sure. From reading, most lamp errors will stop the TV powering up.

Re: 50" Samsung DLP HL-P5063W 3 flashing lights Unreliable Start Up

OK I did some more testing tonight. I was having touble getting it started tonight. Finally, I got it turned on. and After a couple tries I found out the Service code was Mute-1-8-2-Power Apparently thats what it is on these Samaung DLPs.

However, In the process of trying to get it into Service mode, I took the color wheel assembly back apart and took the color wheel out again this time I got a AA battery out and I attached a jumper to pin 1 of the Color wheel. And slid the other jumper across the other three contacts on the color wheel the motor spun fine during this test. So I cleaned the contacts and put the color wheel back In. I then made sure all the fans were spinning which they were. Then I checked the voltage coming in to the balast, and found it to be 325-315 which from my reading seems correct for this model. I then left the lamp out and powered up the tv, so I could see the color wheel and check if it was spinning up. I found that it was not, after restarting the tv several more times the color wheel finally spun up. When the color wheel spun up I heard a click(which i believe was a relay on the ballast board) I unplugged the tv and installed the lamp and turned the tv back on. The color wheel spun up and the lamp turned on

According to some reading I was doing someone mentioned that the color wheel had to spin up before the lamp would fire. This seems in line with the result I got.

So tell me if this theory sounds right, I think that the lamp and the ballast are fine considering they work when the color wheel spins up. I also am going to assume for right now that the color wheel, is fine since it is spinning with a 1.5v battery and when the TV works it works fine and I see no color issues. Therefore I think that either 1. They power board is faulty and is not proving power correctly until it heats up so to speak. 2. that the DMD board has a problem and is not starting to color wheel until it heats up.

Which do you think is more likely? I don't think that the problem is in the digital section with all the inputs but I could be wrong.

I have had the Tv on for 3 hours or with no problems, I also turned it off for ~10 minutes then back on and it came on the first try without any problems.

It almost sounds like you might have a "bad caps" situation. If it takes multiple times to get the tv to turn ect ect. I do know that when the color wheel fails you will hear it screeeeech. It happened to me on my HLS5086 that i bought in 2006. What is you power boards part number?

I was thinking about using a hair dryer heat gun do warm up the boards individually to see if I could find where the problem was. Would this work? Yeah I am not getting any noise except noise similar to a hard drives as is to be expected at 9000rpm.

                          It has quite a few numbers, Chassis l62b, atlantis-smps, bp-4100131A, fp801s, bp94-02141F/Power (04.05.18(U-NIX)), hlp5063ws/xaa, Unix 20040611,

Also, when people say they have a plasma tv they mean an DLP right? Or is their another type of TV besides CRTs, LCDs, and DLPs?

Why? I don't hear any noise and it's not broken or damaged in anyway.

Attached is the training manual which may help with your troubleshooting also there's a service bulletin depending on serial number of your DLP with problems with ballast units, which I've attached also hope this helps

Do you know how long it has been since the lamp was changed? You may want to pull it out and see if there is bulging at the bottom of the stem.

I did do that I haven't found anything that looks wrong on it.

It seems to me that as long as the color wheel starts then the ballast and Lamp work fine. Can a color wheel work only some of the time when it is a brush less motor?

Yes color wheel can develop "dead" spot where it will not turn up when system micro has told dmd to initiate color wheel on command. Most time the usual signs of color wheel failure is the audible squelching sound during its rotation, and if you do NOT obtain color wheel rotation the dmd sends signal back to system micro tell it no color wheel run detect and this will then keep the ballast from turning on

                                        CASE DETAILS

Promblem Signs: Backlight on 1 sec off 7sec > repeat && Red standby light: 1blink, off 3 sec, 2 blinks, off 5 secs, 2 blinks, off 3 sec, restart cycle

13V present on powerboard output. Backlight continues flashing after removing cables to pannel one at a time and even with both disconnected. NOTE: backlight STOPs flashing and remains on when connector between powerboard and mainboard (note Tcon built in) is disconnected.

Tried inserting firmware on USB and left it in for a few hours, but no change
