Vizio E470VL Dead

New member here. We had a thunder storm a few weeks ago and lightning struck really close to my house, I heard a loud "POP" and in the end my PS3 and my Vizio E470VL got damaged. The TV does nothing, no amber lights no anything.

I turned it in on my house insurance and I got a whopping $376 for both the TV and PS3....argh! The TV repair man quoted $350 to replace a board but on the estimate it did not say power or motherboard so I dont know which one got damaged or if both did. I told him not to fix it for that price.

I want to test the power supply board but not really sure how I should do it. I have a digital meter at hand. I did check all the capacitors and none are buldged and the fuse checks out okay. The power board has indicators on what the voltages are but should I use the chassis ground or the ground pin on the board to get the voltage test?

If all else fails I can buy both boards and see if that fixes it. I know I should probably buy a different TV but I do really like this one.

Ok, I just did a quick test on the power board. I tested the main big 450V cap and got 178V then I put the ground clip of the digital multimemter on the chassy of the TV and tested:

5V Pin 1 - 5.17V
5V Pin 2 - 5.17V
5V Pin 3 - 5.18V

12V Pin 1 - 0V
12V Pin 2 - 0V
12V Pin 3 - 0V

Is there something wrong with the power board?

Is there something wrong with the power board?

The main/logic board is responsible for sending a PS_ON or equivalent signal to the power supply to turn on all the other voltages (other than 5V standby which is always on).

If the PS_ON pin is 0V, then the main board is not sending the signal. If the PS_ON is > 2V, then the problem likely lies in the power supply.

Thank you, I'll get pics up as soon as I can. I just tested the PS_ON pin and got 0V.

Can you see any black marks/goo/soot on any parts on the mainboard? Is there holes/cracks in any of the chips?

It may help if you could take a few pictures too

If you are getting 0V on PS_ON, it is likely the main board at fault.

No burn/cracks anywhere on the board but it does have that faint electrical smell. I havent tested anything else yet due to alot hours at work.

I know, I should just buy a new PS and main board, but then again I don't even know if the screen or backlight is any good either. I still cant figure out why the fuse never blew when the surge hit, unless the surge came from the PS3 HDMI cable when the surge hit.

It could have, I work for the cable co and have seen lightning go thru the cable, not just the AC and burn up whatever that cable is connected to. Will go thru phone lines too and ethernet cables to burn out routers and network cards.. You should be able to systematically go thru the steps and figure out where the problem is though. I have never heard of lightning damaging the LCD panel or backlights but Im sure anything is possible..
