Help with Plasma tv.

I have 2 plasma tvs that I am working on. they are both the same model. One of them is flickering. The other has some static on certain parts of the screen. I have tried switching the power supplys on them and the problem stays the same. So I think that can rule out the power supply. The model of the tv is LG 50PC5D. I am good with electronics but just starting to get into tvs. Any help would be great. I will post some pics soon. On the flickering one you can only see it when Something is plugged in. When it has no input th only thing that flashes is the no input thing.

Ok well I have made some progress with the one that is flickering. Yesterday I unhooked the buffer boards, Then when I plugged them in it was working perfect. Left it on for about 10 minutes, then it started flickering. So I took the buffer board out to check it out and when I put it back in the whole screen was messed up. Now if I unhook the buffer board and turn it on it makes no difference. But if I unhook the Y or Z Sus boards it make the screen black. Any help guys please. How can I find out what the problem is? Also what do you recommend for the other tv? The noise or flashing pixels are only acrross the bottom and top left mostly. What would cause this?

The second set has the dreaded sparklies problem all too common with LG plasmas. It is fixable, but it requires the firmware of the logic board to be flashed with a newer version. Unsure of the first one, maybe post a picture so we can see it better, hard to imagine a description.

Is there anyway I can flash the firmware using the USB service port on the back and the service menu?

As far as the sparkle problem. you can remove one buffer at a time and, see if the symptoms change. if they do obviously, you will need one or both buffers. you can also test the buffers by testing across the gold pads for shorts and, you can also check the individual ics on the buffers for shorts to ground

These sets also have problems with the YSUS IPM Module. Remove the YSUS and XSUS boards and looking at the bottom you will see the bottom of the IPM Module (the big IC with 30 or so pins, under the aluminum heat sink) check between ground and ysus out, etc. if any of these are shorted then you need a YSUS or XSUS depending on which reads shorted.

Yes, you can flash the firmware. go to the manufacturer site and search downloads. ONLY some models have firmware updates available and, some manufacturers do not post them

Unfortunately you -CAN'T- flash the firmware from the USB or SD card slot. You can flash the main processor firmware but not the control board. There's a user on these forums flashing control boards for a small fee.

Thanks to all the people that helped me out. I found out that the tv with the flickering was due to the Ysus and Zsus. The one with the sparkles was a problem with the screen itself. So I took the ysus and zsus from it and put it in the other and now I have one perfect working 50" for $100.

I have the same tv. If the tv is powered up, the y sus heat shield warms up and the z sus stays cool. As for the y sus, the heat shield on the far left gets warm, the others are cool. My symptoms is not picture but little fuze, heavier on the bottom and top R/H side of the screen.

The more tricky way to do the firmware is to remove the flash i.c. off the CTRL and apply the firmware manually. This takes quite a bit of skill in removal, you could buy a blank i.c and flash that then fit that in place to see what happens. I use a cheapo "willem" type programmer with a TSOP48 adaptor. I've modified it somewhat to allow flashing of some other ic's. For an occasional job it's more cost effective than forking out on the LG kit, and can be used for all kinds of jobs.
