Toshiba 55HT1U No Picture, No Sound

Hello, new to the forums and I am finding them very informational.

I realize I should have pictures and all required materials before posting, however to even get my hands on the TV again would require significant effort, and I would very much appreciate some educated responses so I can determine the feasibility of the fix, and whether or not it is worth the effort.

    My Story with Toshiba

Toshiba 55HT1U - All of a sudden picture goes black and sound cuts out while playing Xbox. Ever since this occurrence, the power light will switch from green to red when powering on, however no sound or picture will present itself.

The TV was under warranty still and this is the meat of my question.

I phone toshiba support, who pointed me to a local TV repair shop to get an estimate. I talked with the TV repair store, and based solely on the description like i mentioned above, they diagnosed the TV with a "Bad LCD Panel." This was their explicit wording. The Repair shop called Toshiba and got the part on order.

I waited over 2 months for this part, as they stated it was on back-order. Finally, I called toshiba and explained my situation, they decided that they would rather give me the depreciated value of the TV, and that a local store would be calling me to arrange a pick up.

The depreciated value of the TV was $750 instead of the $1000 that I paid for the TV, with approx 4 months left under my 1 year warranty. I took the depreciated value, and have NEVER received any kind of call to pick up the TV. It is still sitting in storage.

    Problems with TV

As I have stated above, the only symptoms I can see are that Power light turns from Red to Green at startup, but no sound or picture is presented.

This particular model has a service bulletin for "LCD Panel Inverter Failure"

The TV repairman told me that these boards are "Connected to the LCD panel and cannot be replaced easily" therefore he tried to order an entire LCD Display Panel from Toshiba, all without even seeing the TV.

I need to know if this is indeed true, as I can see some Master/Slave Inverter boards for sale on Ebay and shopjimmy. I am willing to open the TV and look for burnt caps, chips, etc, however this would be my first time working with a television.

Is this still a feasible route for me to take considering what I have been told by the TV Repairman?

    What a useless technician!

First of all, your symptoms -DO NOT- match a failed inverter. You do not have sound, the inverter only lights the screen. A failure in it will very rarely cause issues with the sound.

Second of all, you do not have to replace the whole LCD panel for an inverter. I guess Toshiba pay him either way and it's easiest, but a 55" LCD panel ain't cheap. Both the inverters and backlights can be replaced, although the backlights are more difficult. For what it is worth, I have never seen a CCFL tube fail on an LCD TV (most TVs use an array of these small, thin, long florescent tubes, similar to the ones in energy saving lamps); although it is fairly common on LCD monitors.

I have heard the most common issues with these Toshibas is the "Seine" board - this board handles cable input etc I believe so you can try without it and see if it powers up fine without it, if so you can replace the board or live without the cable input (your choice.)

Most people would gladly pay for a faulty 55" LCD, as they are well worth fixing - seems strange Toshiba or the technician was not interested in it!

Re: Toshiba 55HT1U No Picture, No Sound

I haven't had to pay the tech anything. I believe he was contracted by Toshiba as a local repair tech. Which also had me thinking that he could just say "Oh the panel is dead" to Tosh, put one on order, and strip my TV for parts or only replace what was needed, keeping the rest. But I wont speculate on that kind of business practice as I am not educated in the field. It just strikes me as very odd, especially after browsing these forums, that with the limited description I gave him on the phone, he could make a diagnosis so quickly and confidently.

Thank you tom66, with that info I feel relief in knowing that a fix is possible. I am going to get my hands on the TV and get it setup for repair asap. I will open it and take very good pictures as is standard procedure around here.

I have been looking into the parts, and it seems there are "Rev 4" and "Rev 6" versions of the boards out there. They dont seem compatible to me, which has me thinking that this "LCD Panel Inverter Failure" will happen again even if I manage to get it fixed. Not only that, but the "Rev 6" Versions of the boards seem to be out of stock across the board. I am hoping I can manage a board level repair on these parts due to this reason, assuming my TV has the "Rev 6" versions of the boards. I guess what I am trying to say is, I will need significant hand-holding guidance if that is the case.

My Tosihiba model 55ht1u is doing a similar thing. The Power light comes on green, but there is no sound, no picture. When I turn the power off there appears be be a backlight of sort. Also, I have no input connectors attached, because if I do have an HDMI Cable attached and I turn the power on the TV, it turns on my receiver and cable box. I do see you have some parts in stock, do you have any that my help my problem?

I don't sell parts except privately on eBay, but not many (just the occasional odd one removed from a cracked screen TV.)

My guess would be a main board or power board issue but you would need to do some diagnosis to find out which. Also, do check in a dark room and see if the screen lights up at all. And, check if the HDMI turning on the receiver (CEC control) works when the TV is faulty like this.

Wow, thanks for the very fast reply. With no HDMI or Coax inputs, the screen appears to have a backlight glow only when I power the unit off. When I power it on, the green light goes on and the screen gets dark, Next, when I plug in the HDMI cable to HDMI 1 and poer the unit up the DVD Player Turns on, the TV Green light goes on but the screen is black with no backlight and no sound. Last step was to power off with the above HDMI cable in, the backlight now goes out with along with the DVD player. If you have any of the suspect parts, send me to your web page please.....Thank you. Jim

                Hello,

I have the same problem with no picture and no sound on my 55ht1u. I found the cable connector between the slave 1 and slave 2 "burnt". Can anyone offer any input or troubleshooting for what may have failed to cause this?

I have a picture that has a red tint around everything in the picture. I've tried every adjustment I could find to get a clear picture but nothing works. It was working fine until I moved the TV to another room as I was painting walls and then put it back. I didn't drop or bump it. All connections are the same. Any ideas?

Dude, many thanks. I just took my 2 year old 55" Toshiba apart. And the 1" jumper between Slave 1 and Slave 2 are also fried, similar to yours. Local repair shop says they are buffer boards and they have them in stock for $119. They say some copper transformers on slave boards have fried ... and should be replaced. They have to make the 1", 12-13 wire, jumper by hand. Did you get this far? Did you try to repair it? Thanks.

Wow, I have the same exact problem. Called Toshiba and they confirmed the hidden warranty, but even that expired 6 mos ago. I am planning to buy the slave1 and slave2 boards from ebay and see if that fixes it. I have to figure out how to make that 14 pin jumper cable.

Anyone know what caused that cable to burnout. If it was just bad board, replacing it should get me going. If it was caused by a different board like T-Con, power supply or main board, not sure how to figure it out without burning this board again. Any ideas?

I had the burnt connector between the two slave inverters. So I bought the two slave inverter board that were burnt out on Ebay and replaced them. I still do not have a picture. So now there are 3 more options, the main board, T-Con Board and the power supply. I can probably measure the voltages from the power supply board and test it. I can try the T-Con and the main board.
Anyone got this working? Could it be the LCD itself. Then it would be a waste to spend any more money on this.

Hello everyone. I just bought a used toshiba 55g300u. when i went to buy it there were no issues. i haven't really used it much, but it just started making a high pitch sound and the picture comes on and off in no particular sequence.
i have tried to use the different hdmi and cable inputs and it happens to all. the picture goes on and off but the sound remains. if i tap on the back cover the picture comes back or turns off. if you are on the menu and the picture goes off, you don't see the menu either.
i just need a general idea if the tv is toast, or if its an inverter, a bad backlight tube, power issue, or connection issue?
thanks to anyone who can help me!!!

Finally got it. It was the other two master inverter boards. First I disconnected both the inverters and I got the faint pictures with flashlights. So I knew everything else is good. Connected the slaves and got the faint pictures. So I knew it was the master inverters.

I have a 60 inch Samsung UN60EH6000F flatscreen TV. The screen went black a few months ago Sound is good, backlight is good, no menu. I replaced the TCon board with a used board purchased from Ebay. It worked fine for a 3-4 months, then the screen started ‘fading' back. Once again, sound is good, backlight is good, no menu. However, this time the picture looks fine for about 10-15 minutes, then fades back. If I power cycle the TV, the display reappears, for another 10-15 minutes, then fades black again. Repeatable ever time.

                              Hi Everyone,

I'm working on a Toshiba 37AV500A Regza TV.

                              The issue:
TV was working picture and sound went out. Green stand by light stayed on, It will respond to the power button being pressed (goes in and out of standby)
The TV will very intermittently work for around 40 mins then stop. This doesn't seem to matter if its hot/cold unplugged for a while etc.

I checked the PSU voltages and everything looked good.
No bulging caps or signs of heat.

                              24v aud = 24.41v
                              12v = 11.98v
                              5v = 5.062
                              p_o/f = Goes high...

                              Hello everyone,
Ive got a UE60KU6079 on the workbench that is giving me some headaches trying to troubleshoot.
The previous owner stated that there had been white dots on the screen which from the description sounded like some lenses fell of the backlight LEDs.
He had opened the TV from the back, trying to get to the backlight, supposedly gave up, reassebled everything and gave the TV to me.
I expected the worst like ripped COF cables or a cracked panel but could not find anything like that yet.
Anyway I still fully expect that there has been something seriously damaged...

                              Hi all

I was just given a Samsung TV with the issue. I read various threads and videos and attempted the ribbon tape method to gain an image, but no luck.

                              Symptom:
                              No picture no sound.
When I plug in the power cord, Backlight LED turns on for a half second and then turns off. The red LED next to the power button located center bottom flashes 2 or 3 times. When the power button is pressed after, it does the same thing.
                              No sound at all.

                              What I tried:
                              1. I tried unplugging the left or right ribbon...
