    Polaroid flm-373b

Hello All! I`m new to the Site. After 2 hours of research on this site and watching some videos on YouTube, I was able to fix this Polaroid flm-373b that my neighbor threw away. It was around 7pm I came home from my wife's friends birthday party and I noticed that my neighbor put out a real nice Flat screen tv out for the trash. I asked him what was wrong with it he said that theirs a whining sound coming from the speakers and it just shuts off so I said I`ll take it. So I got it to my work bench and plugged it in and sure enough the whining high pitch was there and then it shut off. So I Google Polaroid flm-373b whining sound. It came up on several Fix-em Sites that people was having the same problem and someone mentioned this Site and their was a video on Youtube to fix the problem. Mind you that I never in my life fixed a Flat screen tv. I do have some knowledge on fixing electronics but not a Tv. So after I did some research I found out that it was the CAPS on the power supply board 2 1000 uf 10v and 1 1000uf 35v CAPS that were puffed up. So the next day went to my local Radio Shack all they had was a 1000uf 35v cap but no 1000uf 10v caps so I got home and desoldered the 35v cap and replaced it with the new one, put it back together thinking it would just turn on,the whining is gone but no picture. Well I was thinking I had to go online and get the other CAPS. So I`m looking around my work bench for some used caps on motherboards, PSU`s but no luck. I had an old Linksys router that I wasnt using so I opened it up and there they were 2 1000uf 15v caps, smaller but it should do the trick. So I soldered them on the board and out everything all together and BAM I had picture and sound. My neighbor came over to to borrow my weed whacker and found out that his`s Tv that he threw away is working like new. He asked my how much did I spend to get it working, He was a little peed off when I said that it cost me $1.99 to fix it and 2 used CAPS from an old Linksys router. I got the Polaroid flm-373b hanging on my wall in my bedroom. Thank you Neighbor for the TV........

Great to hear you fixed the TV, but I predict you will be opening the TV up in a year to replace the non-low-ESR cap you got from RadioShack. In future, I would recommend Panasonic FC, FM or FR from Digikey. I would not recommend reusing caps but they might be okay if they were good quality.

I fixed the same chassis as a Bush TV. Cost £5 to fix. 1000u 35V Chemicon KY and two 1000u 10V Panasonic FM caps.

This is my very first TV repair so I`m still learning about what CAPS are good and whats junk. This site is a god sent. I`ll do my research on good caps and I`ll just get rid of the CAPS I soldered in and replace them with new ones. Now I`m on the look out for any flat screens on craigslist since I know what to look for.
