    TV on ebay: Panasonic th-42pz80a

    Hi guys,

There is a Panasonic th42pz80a 42" tv on ebay, about 10 minutes up the road from where I live - starting price is $A20.

    Description of the fault is:
"originally there was a black line going down the side of the TV while it was on, shortly after it wouldnt turn on (details below)
As soon as i press the on button, it makes 2 quick 'clicks' followed by another shortly after, the green light flashes for about five seconds and then turns red."

Not sure about the black line - the not turning on sounds potentially cap related.

Any thoughts before I go ahead and bid? The TV is full HD - so well worth repairing

Black line is panel failure - unrepairable - common with Panasonics of this generation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXy2jHNpv_0

No Panasonic that I know of has bad cap issues, they are extremely solidly built in that department (Rubycon, Panasonic, Chemicon and Nichicon caps throughout - nowadays they are moving more exclusively to entirely Panasonic and Rubycon), probably MC201/301 issue or another controller IC issue.

I've repaired the TH-42PZ80BA which had a Y-sustain energy recovery problem - just a shorted MOSFET and lower buffer fault, nothing too difficult. As far as I know, the only difference is BA is the European model with SCART and DVB-T (free to air) and such. It is a very, very well built TV and gives a fantastic picture and brilliant sound - probably the best I've ever seen and heard from any LCD or plasma. But it is one hell of a beast... draws about 400W and weighs 35kg!

Have asked the seller if the black line is isolated to 1/6 of the screen which may indicate a buffer board problem as opposed to the panel...

It's virtually always panel - Panasonic literature says replace the panel with ANY line from top to bottom. Left to right is almost unheard of but would be Y buffer or control board, or possibly even a loose Y buffer connector.

OK - I'll give it a miss then, shame.... I am hoping to snaffle 2x Viewsonic VX2835WM's on ebay today for a good price - these have the same power supply as the Hanns 28" so should be pretty easy to repair..

If I won a 42" TV as well I think the wife would kill me :P

Nice. I want another 24" LCD to repair for epic dual desktop-ness. Although the current 24" looks to be a squeeze... I dunno if I'll fit a second one on!

                    More on the Panasonic:

"the line was all the way down the screen, 3 cm wide, it was 9cm in from the right hand side of the TV, and the LED goes green for 2-3 seconds, followed by 10 flashes of red, it has 7 seconds then flashes 10 red times again"

line down the full length of the screen is a panel fault like tom suggests (as far as I can tell), so I'll definitely skip this TV and wait for something better to show up
