    Samsung LE40A656A1F - Possible T-con fault?

I am thinking of picking up this TV. It looks like a T-con fault to me. Does anyone know the model # of the T-con used in this TV?

Nice find. Looks like the one on eBay auctions. I'll think about picking it up, but I'm on the hunt for an LED set to repair now so I might let it pass.

I'm going to pick up the TV on Friday (just checked it's a 1080p set so definitely worth picking up), but can anyone confirm or counter my diagnosis of the T-con being at fault?

I cannot confirm but it is strange that the on screen menu looks normal but the noise bars do not affect the on screen display.

The noise bars do affect the OSD, and the picture. Here's a video from the owner.

Could be a panel issue? Though it looks too regular... Didn't you have a Sony with this problem, or am I imagining things?

I cannot confirm the cause of the fault but I can confirm that its an awesome tv. My friend bought one for 1200 a few years ago and he still loves it.

What is it setting you back?

                  Bargain. 100Hz too!

I am looking at an LG 50PB2DR can you remember someone having an issue with an LG plasma with a built in HDD a few weeks ago? I have been trying to find the thread to see if its similar.

100 Hz scanning for low flicker. I've got to see this, as I've never seen a good Samsung panel blur or flicker, or a good LG LCD for that matter, including the one in front of me (dumpster find 42LC46 and it has a *proper* LG Philips panel.) I'm guessing because the newer Sammys use CMO/Chungwha crap they need 100 Hz scanning. The Chungwha in the Hanspree has awful motion performance, it's actually distracting with normal content.

Is this the LG thread? https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...5&highlight=LG

The new new ones use their own rating to confuse people into thinking they are better than they actually are. They call it CMR Hz which is how many pixels the can change per second without causing blur. So the new D8000 is listed as 800Hz when its more like 200Hz.

But but but!!! The human eye can only see up to 15 Hz in the normal vision field and 40-70 Hz in peripheral vision so why an earth does anyone need 200 Hz?

Technically 50 Hz refresh rate LCDs can be called 100 Hz, because the pixels are interleaved in a checkerboard fashion and updated like that to keep DC bias across the panel to a minimum.

It will be interesting to see what technology Samsung are using to do frame interpolation. I expect it's either an FPGA (pricey, Philips used one for the Ambilight effect on their LCDs though) or a custom ASIC. Might even be built into T-con.

The two Sony's I had were due to bad T-CON.

Yep its a shame that company's try to trick customers rather than just making things fair and easy. Its just like the old contrast ratio con.

Pioneer were good at what they did by not advertising the contrast ratio anywhere.

That's probably why they left the TV market. Lie to your customers (and sell them crap at twice the price it's worth) or lose.

In the video, the noise moves, so I'm hoping it's not a bad panel, as the lines would usually be fixed with a bad panel. Still, I think it might be repairable even with bad tab bonds. I'll see when I get it.

I swear I've seen this problem before, but I'm not sure where! The Sony looks similar, but it's got blocks of fixed colour instead of noise.

I'm getting rid of two of my repaired 32" LCDs this week, so I'm clearing space for a big project...

I am working on LG 47LH55 with Horizontal lines and white screen after a minute on top of the pictures, so I did not see bad tab (press on them made no difference) on the panel yet, clean and re-seat the T-CON cable, no luck. There is no active components on the LCD panel board either, check MLC caps for shorts, no luck. I will be ordering new T-CON, TV is only 3 years old.

I had a vaguely similar fault with a Samsung; turned out to be a bad LDO on the T-con, one was supposed to give 2.5V but was only giving 1.3V.

I check the LDO RT9183-12 (1.2V) check OK.
Another thing is that I did not find any Source/Gate drive for the TFT on the panel itself which is why I do not believe it is bad panel to have that many X/Y drivers to go bad on the whole screen.
I need to look up the spec on that large IC on the T-CON to see how it works.
