    Sony KDL40S4100 question

Found an ad about this TV and I don't know if it's worth fixing.
What do you guys think of this issue?
I did some reasearch, but I couldn't find this issue yet.
Here is what the seller states:
"Works great, except for a black vertical line that is covering about 1/4 of the screen"

    Re: Sony KDL40S4100 question

This model is affected by the bad tab bonding which leads to a ghosting affect on half the screen and some color issues, possibly also missing lines / or a 2 black lines that cross in the middle to form 4 quadrants on the screen. I have a thread on here about the kdl40s5100 that i tried to fix and got nowhere, but some of them are fixable by applying pressure to a tab along 1 side.

Id ask for a picture of the issue it has, and ask if it has any ghosting (the seller i bought from lied and said it didnt...). Then also make sure to test it before paying for it to make sure they arent lieing.

If 1/4 of the screen is black, they might have 1 out of 4 ribbons from the t-con disconected (but i strongly doubt this cause my kdl40s5100 has only 2 ribbons. Possibly this guy had a whole tab (there are 4 tabs at top, tabs arent he same as ribbons), come disconnected and so it wouldnt be fixable. Should be able to search ebay for the tcon for that model and see if it has 2 or 4 ribbons.

      There are two connections.
So you are saying that it's to risky.
Could you explain or show the ghosting symptom please?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCExlSnG4yY shows the problem with brightness and ghosting on 1 side. also shows the fix basically. (this applies mostly to 46 and 52" models)

This video shows a fix for 32" models that i though was fake when i was looking at the videos 6 months ago, but now theres like 10 videos showing the same fix, and giving all the info (the original video wanted you to pay 5 dollars for the secret info...)
        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UrTV...eature=related

I might try this method on my 40" , but i have afeeling it might only apply to the 32" models.

Moral of the story? Sony makes a lot of crap.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pJteewNiW4 this looks like it might be the problem the one you found will have. This clearly looks like a tab bonding issue since there is ghosting + darkness issues. Thought the darkness seems to just be a horizontal section at the bottom (so perhaps similar to the one you found)

Thank you for all the help, but most likely it's better staying away from that model TV.
I have picked up a 40V4150 with bad LCD panel. I know it sounds even worse then the other one, but look at this forum :
            http://www.agoraquest.com/viewtopic...._page_number=1
I'm hoping that this TV has the same issue, since has the 13 blinks.

If they want more then 20 and it most likely has one of the problems i linked above then i wouldnt risk it . If they want less then 20 might sitll be worth a shot.
Doesnt really hurt to ask them for a picture of the error.

The bulb fix on that other model looks interesting. I havent had to perform a bulb replacement yet, though a few years ago i took the bulb out of a laptop screen (was just taped on to the bottom).

I opened up the panel of the 4150 with thirteen blinks and found a bulb that won't turn on. Ordered one for $25 shipped. I will let you know if it fixed the issue.

Did you check the transformer on the inverter that handles that bulb? Assuming you tested that and it was fine, then the bulb should work

I have thought about that after placing the order, but then I remembered that the previous owner(another repearman) did mention that he replaced the T-con and inverter boards.

Nice shot. Hi speed 300 FPS video mode on some digital cameras seems useful now .

What you can also try, if the bulbs can be individually disconnected, is to unplug one bulb at a time until you cannot see a flash.

What are you trying to achieve here?
The tubes just stay on for like two seconds and then they turn off and through a code.

You can correct me if I'm not writing correctly, I don't mind.

                                  Re: Sony KDL40S4100 question

Im not sure why he recomended you disconect 1 bulb? Because you can clearly tell from the picture which bulb is bad.

If you want i can take a picture of my sharp's bulbs lighting up for 2 seconds, i just realized that was the problem with the sharp set that i originally harmed the transformer on while testing it the first time. (the sharp was amazingly easy to get to the bulbs on, the LCD was screwed onto the bezel / outer frame, and so all i had to do was disconect the ribbon cables and unscrew 8 screws and it slid right of the light box, and could be placed in the corner for now without worying about it getting broke / bending.

I have heard that if you measure the resistance of a working bulb you can just put a resistor in place of 1 bulb and it will turn on, just will have a darker band in the center of the tv (might also burn up the resistor? seems like a lot of voltage to need to disipate) But for now i need to find a place to buy a replacement bulb for my sharp.

And im not scared of you being dracula, just scared of you singing dragostea din tei while fixing tv's BTW you used through instead of throw, but a lot of native english speakers dont get that correct.

Does the bad lamp has blackened end? That is usually wrong with worn out bulb, or it may glow with pinkish color. Also there is no ballast cap for the lamps or it is direct connection to the transformer?

                                      Re: Sony KDL40S4100 question

The first thing I looked at, the black ends and to my surprise all of them had a very small black end. The bad one doesn't look any different then the others.
At the ends on each lamp there is a small clip, almost as the fluorescent lamp connectors have it is just very small and much tighter fit. Basically you just have to push/pull it in/out the ccfl tube. The ccfl tube flexes a bit, but not much. It's 3MM dia. and 900MM long(40" TV).
I have replaced the bad tube with a good one and the bad spot followed the bad tube, so the bulb is bad for sure.
cash on this Sony it's probably easier to remove the tubes, the whole black plastic frame is held by snap clips only+ the two ribbon cables.
There is a warning in the SM though and I agree with them. DO NOT REMOVE THE BLACK COVER BY THE INVERTER BOARD! YOU WILL BRAKE ALL THE BULBS OR AT LEAST THEY WILL FALL(snap out from there clips).
Thanks for correcting me, you are right about that.
