I noticed on the inverter boards, the solder is on the top and there are no holes to put the leads through. Any tips or techniques on how to solder the new caps on the board?

When you de solder the old ones see how they are attached.
Take one off - If you are just left with a blob of solder and no attachment you might want to consider cutting the legs on the next 3 and soldering the new cap
to the stumps. - Other members may have better ideas.

those inverter boards look very familiar, recently I have replaced the chip and the four fet transistors on the slave board. Measure the fets across and see if do you read ~8.5k, if less then most likely the chip or maybe even the fet it's gone. On Ebay they sell this kit.

I measured all six (both boards) and they all ranged between 8.38k and 8.47k.

I just want to say thanks to all that helped me on this project!

After recapping both inverter boards and the power supply, everything is working great now.

Surprised the hell out of me when I plugged it in and saw a blue screen.

Also, just want to note for future Vizio TV troubleshooting that when the blue screen came up, the initial text on the screen said "No RGB Input Detected, TV will shut down now", and 43 seconds later it went into standby mode. This is most likely why the TV was going into standby mode when I was troubleshooting ... I just didn't know why because I couldn't read the screen.

Hi everyone. I've been reading through here for a couple of days and finally registered for the site this morning. I have to say, god bless you guys and all of your knowledge!
I am having a very similar issue with a VW42L FHDTV10A but my remote powers the set on and off. Let me step back, Tuesday, all was fine, watching tv, then, no sound, no pic. I switched channels thinking dish went out, still no display or sound. I powered off and back on using the remote control, visio logo went from orange to white, tv started working fine, 10 minutes later again no pic or sound. Unplugged and left off for 45 minutes, plugged back in, orange light on, power on via side of tv, worked again but only for 5 minutes. Tried again, now, white logo stays on but no pic or sound. That's when I started internet research and found you guys. I read, and read, and read, finally decided to try to tackle the repair. So far, I've opened the back cover and removed the cover plates from the various boards. Visually, only the power board shows heat/age, but I don't see any bulging anywhere? I know you guys love pics so I'll take them next and post. In the meantime, I have to say that I've never opened a tv before so this is all VERY new to me. I am very comfortable with board replacements as I've done alot of PC building in my day, but when it comes to soldering, I don't have the patience, steady hand, or eye sight for it, so I'm hoping to just replace a board or two and be done. My first question is, which board do you think this would be? Right now I can plug in, orange light comes on, use the remote and power on, orange turns to white and stays white. I don't see a "blue" light, so I'm thinking if there were one I would see it?

I tried to upload pics but after selecting my files and clicking "Upload", after several long minutes I get an IE error, Can not display webpage with the following link at the top. Any ideas what I may be doing wrong?

The pictures can't exceed 2000 x 2000. I use windows paint to crop the board then shrink it down. When the tv turns on does the backlight come on?

OK, so strangely enough the tv now works. After closely looking at the 4 boards (power supply, t-con, inverter, main board) and finding no obvious damage, no bulging caps, no dark or burned spots I decided to unplug and replug every connector I could find to make sure nothing was loose. Plugged the tv in, powered on and saw the blue light on the t-con board come on and then fade off, looked at the screen and had a bouncing logo, plugged the cable to it, picture and sound working perfectly. I let it run for 1/2 hour, no issues, turned off and on several times using remote, worked every time. Turned off for 2 hours, turned back on, working perfectly. I unplugged, screwed back on all cover plates, plugged in and tested again, still working. Unplugged again, put on back cover, plugged in again, all working fine and it's been over an hour.
So, apparently, a connector must have worked itself loose! Something so simple, who would've thought!!!
Anyway, I do want to note that I found 3 smaller screws laying under the tv. I still don't know where they came from as I replaced every screw I took out and did not see any open screw holes. I know, it sounds like the old joke of putting it back together and having parts left over, but I swear these are not screws I took out as I kept track of every one of them. I did flip the screen upside down and over a couple times when I was taking off the back cover so maybe they were inside somewhere? Maybe one of these was causing an intermitent short?
Don't know but glad I wasn't afraid to open it up, take a look, and reseat the connectors.

Hi again everyone. It's been a few weeks since my last post and in that time I've come to the conclusion that my vizio tv is just tired of hanging on the wall. It intermittently will just cut off the picture and sound. After unplugged it seems to work again, for a while at least. Unfortunately, when it stops and I pull the tv off the wall, open up the back, plug it in, it starts working again and doesn't fail until I hang it back on the wall.
I'm thinking an overheating problem since once the back is off I can leave it running for days with no issue. It's only once I put the back on and hang it on the wall it cuts out again. Right now it's on a table leaned against the wall with the back on and has been running two days straight with no issues.
So, here's my question, do you guys think it's an overheating issue? and which board would you guess most likely to cause this. The only boards that throw alot of heat are the power supply and the tcon boards, all others are cool to the touch.
I'm open to any suggestions you may have.

It could be a cold solder joint on the power supply or other board. The problem is it might be difficult to find it. You could try using a hairdryer to heat up boards, and seeing if it shuts down when one particular board is heated.

Thanks for the fast response. Is there a risk of damaging other components by heating them up like that? Or would it only affect the damaged part? Would I be better off just replacing the tcon board for $35 and if it doesn't work replace the power supply? Or do you think the main board or inverter board might be the issue even though they do not through any heat and look almost like new? Just trying to way my odds and options.

That's "the do not throw any heat" and I am trying to "weigh" my options. TV cut out again, powered off with remote, walked over and pressed the power button on side of tv and powered right back up. It had been working find the last several days. And just happened yet again, this time, powered off with remote, waited two minutes, powered on with remote. Arghhh....

I just wanted to post a final Thank You to all on this and other threads. I opted to replace the main board and has been fine for over 2 weeks. Cost $130 - $30 core refunded after sent back the old one. I only wish I had the patience, steady hand, and equipment you guys have to do the board solder repairs. Thanks again to all the posters!!
