Usually when one buffer is disconnected, the other loses some important control signals and goes a little crazy causing the repeated pattern.

50" telly as a student... where will you put it... my dorm is really cramped!

Yeah, I saw it was a gift. I was just making light of the fact that it's massive. Enjoy it when it's fixed. These newer LG plasma TVs seem to be pretty decent -- much better than the newer Samsung ones.

Try replacing those first. If it still won't fire up, it's the Y-sustain or Z-sustain.

Re: LG 50PG3000-ZA help needed please.

                Left large board, Y-sus.
                Right large board, Z-sus.

                Looking from the back.

I have had an LG with bad caps cause it to appear dead before, though it would show standby light after about 15 minutes of being plugged in. So I would say first, replace those caps.

A hairdryer can get a TV to start up with bad caps. Just heat them up while the TV is plugged in.
Then you can confirm if it has other faults...

Here I demonstrate with a Samsung with crap bulging SAMWHA caps (I bet they are the same as on yours):

Hi all, hope I'm not quite hijacking the thread, thought it was relevant enough to not have to start another...

Same TV (50PG3000)... can get sound but no picture at all..

tried disconnecting alternating buffer boards and I still get absolutely nothing.

People have mentioned an LED on a controller board as well as the power LED on the front... I don't see any lit LED on any of the boards inside the telly, can someone advise me as to where this LED should be and, if not lit, would it indicate that board specifically has failed?

                      Thanksssss

The LEDs are on this board -- top right:

Awesome thanks .. nothing lighting up on that board, does anyone have an idea/opinion on if... the lack of LEDs indicates this board is dead OR if it indicates a related board is dead?

I don't know -- but usually on an LG, those indicate temperature in binary. If they are not lit up, it may be normal if the set is still cold.

Hmmm! Well, I've checked the fuses with a multimeter and they're all fine, how's best to test the voltage on the other boards... I assume they should be getting power just like the AV board even if the controller board was dead.

There are a few regulators -- can you test those?

Getting a reading off all three regs on the controller board - so it's getting power, think this is a sign that it is the controller that's borked as the LEDs aren't illuminating?

It's possible. Those LEDs are controlled by the large "LG" processor in the middle of the board which also handles the plasma display functions... something wrong there would cause no LEDs to light up.

I reckon I'm satisfied enough to buy a new controller board - worst case scenario it's not what's broken and have to resell it Will post an update when it arrives.

Thanks so much for the help
