JVC 42" Thick Vertical Lines (Samsung S42SD-YD05 Pannel)

    Hello,

I have just acquired a JVC 42" tv that has thick black and green vertical lines down the left side of the screen, I have checked all of the ribbon cables for loose connections but everything seems ok. I have been reading some other threads posted here that say this could be one of the X drivers. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful, this is my first TV repair!

I have attached a picture of the vertical lines that are also appearing when the menu button is pressed.

    Thanks

    Alex

You could have a loose or bad X connector.

I have tried re-seating the x connector for the corresponding section of the screen and it has made no difference. I have also tried swapping ribbon cables from the main board to the G buffer and E buffer but this has made no difference, would it be likely to be the g-buffer board at all or is this most likely a new pannel?

      Thanks

NOT sure if it is worth mentioning, but the TV is also making a buzzing sound, this seems to come from the PSU / Main board area, not sure if this is normal or age related though

The X buffers appear to be bonded to the ribbon cable. If that is the case it's essentially unrepairable. Since this is a standard definition panel (852 x 480), it should be treated as more of a learning opportunity than a repair for profit opportunity.

thanks for your help, I am a student at the moment and only really wanted this TV for myself (HD not an issue) I have also been able to locate a pannel for quite a reasonable price

I have enclosed some more pictures, It seems that the long thin board that the ribbons connect to is called "G-Buffer" but the ribbons also have chips and metal heat-sinks? attached, I have tried to re-solder and check for any dry joints on the ribbon but this has made no difference.

I have also identified the buzzing sound (only present when the pannel is on) to be coming from the "X-Main" board.

When there are issues with the g board or when you have vertical bars you will hear the x driver board buzzing a bit louder than the other boards.

Vertical bars are bad in most cases. You could try a used g board. they are cheap if you can find one. (10 or 20 bucks)

I have not seen this problem (burned chips) on the older plasma tvs mostly 2006 and newer.

I have seen the solder problems and board problems with the older units.

If you can inspect the chip on the ribbon cable or take a look at the g board you might find something.

I have removed the g-buffer board from the tv and inspected with the limited resources I have to hand at the moment! I have seen a cheap g board close by so may go and collect tomorrow and see what happens!

I will try to replace the g-board but I wil not get my hopes up because something is telling me this is more serious!

If it turns out to be the pannel, and I can source a relatively cheap replacement, is the swap over straight forward - I have worked with smaller LCD's before but never plasma displays?

              Many Thanks

The swap over is going to be a pain in the mechanical sense. In simple terms, the TV is built around the panel, so you will have to remove the mounting brackets, power supply, sustains and buffers, signal board, main logic card, etc from the old panel, swap panels, and reinstall everything. For the most part, that is mainly a lot of work with a screwdriver. Then you have to do the electrical setup. This manual (the second one in the list) from Elektrotanya will walk you through the setup.

disconnect the connector from the x board that is closest to the stripe.remove the 2 screws on its heatsink.if you get lucky its the solder joints on the resistors.i have fixed dozens of lg panels this way.if it fixes it resolder the resistors on all of those.
you may have a ghost of the stripe if it has been run a long time this way.try running the white screen option.it will fade with time.

Thanks for the advice guys, I have not been able to locate a buffer board at all in the UK, I have however found a another board that looks very similar. Does anyone know if this is likely to work, or am I wasting my time?

First Picture is the original board, second is the similar one
