Magnavox 42MF230A/37 HDTV Random Turn On

I've had this unit for approximately 5 years with zero problems. For the past 3 days it has begun to randomly turn itself on. Also the AV identifier will now occasionally pop up on the screen when in full operation.

I am just a frustrated viewer, not particularly technically astute. My attempts to fix ended after unplugging, letting it sit, and plugging it back in to the power source. Not surprisingly this proved ineffective.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Odd, we usually get people saying the TV turns itself randomly off, not on.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

      Two potential issues:
      - Maybe standby rails are dropping out and resetting (for an unknown reason) causing the TV to turn on?
      - Maybe the side button board has dirt in it or a loose connector; this also explains the AV identifier (which might be triggered by a button.)

Both problems will require you to open up your set and take pictures.
Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Re: Magnavox 42MF230A/37 HDTV Random Turn On

Tom66 has identified one of several potential areas that could be causing the problem. The 'control panel' is one. Another is the remote sensor sending spurious signals to the standby processor - either generated internally or from another remote. (Recall the scene from 'Grumpy Old Men' with the TV remotes). Another possibility is a problem with the standby processor, but that seems unlikely.

I'd suggest opening the TV up and disconnecting the cable to the control panel. If it then works properly, you know the cause, and you can often pick them up inexpensively.

Re: Magnavox 42MF230A/37 HDTV Random Turn On

First off sorry to bring an old thread back but I still can not seem to start a new one even after a few posts and figure this is related to my issue.

I picked up a magnavox plasma 42mf230a for free that randomly turns on by itself and off and then would just powers cycle and makes a click sound when powering on and off. The image looks great when it works.

I downloaded the service manual and checked voltages coming from the power supply and hey all seem to be within spec. I checked e power supply board for bulging caps and did not see any but went ahead and resoldered them in case of a cold solder joint. I also unplugged the "Y" board and "X" board and tv would still power up and down on its own. I even went as far as to unsolder the rfi sensor for the remote to make sure it was not picking up something. He tv did not come with a remote either so I can not go into the service menu.

Any other ideas? I'm pretty sure it is probably a cap issue on the power supply but don't want to randomly change them, there are a lot of them. On a side note all the boards and panel are labeled Samsung.

One other thing I have not looked at is the PDC board aka power down control board, wonder if that may be an issue?

          Thank you

            Hi,

I'm novice in smps repairs and lurker here also in addition to my preparation I have read Jestine Yong's Troubleshooting & Repairing Switch Mode Power Supplies many times and I cautiously proceeded in small steps a time.

            What's on the table?

A fault is a little tricky here. When plugged into the wall for a first time (i.e. after proper discharge) PSU starts on power button (PS_ON) as expected, runs smoothly with all the voltages in tolerance also shows quite stable operation...

MSI GF63 THIN 11UCX (MS-16R6) LAPTOP WON'T TURN ON AFTER RESTARTING
            by RdeveLabs
            To all the members here...

Let me tell you a little bit about what happened to my laptop (MSI GF63 THIN 11UCX model: MS-16R6) that “maybe” you know how to solve this problem.

So before this problem happened, my laptop was running smoothly. When I wanted to restart my laptop, it looked fine at first. But after I waited for this restart process to take a long time, until finally I panicked (because the restart process did not finish plus the laptop screen only showed a black screen), I immediately pressed and held the power button to force the laptop to turn off. But...

Acer Aspire 4520 won't turn on after reboot
            by robante15
Hello, I have an Acer Aspire 4520 from a couple of decades ago and I want to repair it solely for nostalgia.

It happens that when I turn it on after having been disconnected for a long time, it turns on without problems, it tells me that the BIOS has been reset and that it will load the factory settings, if I tell it to continue, the computer turns on and everything works fine.

The moment I turn it off and want to turn it back on a second time, or restart it and try to start it again, it no longer gives an image, and it no longer responds.

            If I remove the...

Dell latitude e7470 not turn on .power buton on off and Run Power problem
            by masoksian
            Hi everyone,

I am dealing with the problem of turning on and off my Dell e7470 notebook.

The battery charge light is solid white, I press the button, the power indicator and the light on the button are solid for 1-2 seconds and immediately turn off.

The system does not turn on, there is no post.

I removed the RAMs and changed them, changed the battery, RTC battery, AC adapter, removed them and waited, tried again, it does not turn on.
The problem continues in the same way.
I tried to turn on the Fn key, nothing came to the screen....
