VIZIO P42HDTV10A No picture, powers off after 10 seconds

I recently acquired a non-working Vizio P42HDTV10A plasma TV. The guy that originally owned it noted that it made a sort of popping noise, then the picture went dark. Physically, the unit was pristine, very clean. My parent's Samsung Plasma went out about 6 months ago under similar circumstances, and I replaced the power supply w/positive results (as in, the TV is still working, and the work wasn't very difficult), so I figured it couldn't hurt to take a swing at repairing it.

Once I got it home, I noted that the green power light did come on, but it shuts itself off after about 10 seconds (something the original owner didn't tell me), reverting to the orange standby light. Based on what I've read here and elsewhere, the popping problem usually indicates an issue with the y-sus or x boards, whereas the automatic turn off is usually a power supply issue. I should note that the board below the video boards (the one the white ribbon cable from the y-sus board connects to) has 4 little LED indicators on it, and only 3 come on before it shuts itself off.

Now, I'm very much an amateur. I'm not uncomfortable taking electronics apart, and I've done some custom PC builds, etc., but when it comes to multimeters, capacitors, etc., I'm generally out of my element. I do own a multimeter, a very basic one. All the fuses looked good, and I didn't see any suspiciously bulging capacitors (though again, capacitors aren't my strong suit).

So I guess my question here is would there be a relatively easy way to determine which board is causing the issue? I've included pictures of the boards in question with as much detail as possible. If it's a multi-board issue, I'm inclined just to scrap it as putting $200 or more in an outdated set seems like a waste, but if it's a matter of just one bad board or a component that can be repaired, I feel like that's worth the effort.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Your analysis is correct. These sets use a LG Electronics panel assembly that is notorious for failure in the hybrid used on both the Y and Z sustain. When they fail they overload one of the supplies. Sometimes a fuse on the sustain board blows, sometimes the TV shuts itself down, sometimes it continues to operate with a very dim picture.

The test is simple. With the power off, disconnect the heavy cable that runs from the power supply to the Z-Sustain. Turn the TV on. If it stays on, the problem is probably the Z-sustain. If it still turns off, reconnect the power cable to the Z-sustain and disconnect the power cable to the Y-Sustain. Turn it on. If it now stays on, the problem is the Y-Sustain.

Bill, thanks for your reply & help. I tried as you suggested, and both times the TV still kicked off after approx 10 seconds. I'm worried that this means it is both boards, which means this project is probably more expensive than it's worth.

I see some relays on the power board. Does the board make any clicking sounds when the TV is switched on?

It clicks when it is plugged in, and then clicks if you turn it on, and again when it shuts itself off, but I had figured those were 'normal' power clicks.

Well, the clicking could be clues about what is happening with the power supply.

The first click could be the inrush limiter - it always fires when first plugged in and is expected. The second click could be the power supply turning on. The final click could be it turning off, after it falls over for some reason. That would generally indicate a problem external to the power supply, such as a short circuit, but it could also mean bad caps or a bad component on the secondary side of the PSU. In rare cases, it could be the main board, too.

            Do you have a multimeter?

I do have a multimeter, though I can't lay claim to being an expert user. I know the basics, how important it is to have good grounding, etc.

I should add that I tried unplugging both Y and Z boards, and it still follows the same pattern, only that none of the four LED light indicators come on. I don't know if that provides any useful information, but there it is.

Hello Seanotron, were you able to solve this problem ? I just brought home the same tv with exactly the same problem. Thanks

I have a similar problem with my 42in Samsung Plasma model PN42A450P1d, I can turn on and watched the tv 10-15 mins sometime, and other time just 2 to 5 mins before it shuts off, was wondering if it could be a power supply issue or X/Y/Z sustain board, any help is appreciated if anyone have encounter this issue.

Seanotron, I have the exact issue with my Visio (same model). Did you end up fixing the problem and if so, what board did you replace. I am a tinklier and can fix things by swapping boards, but I am not an electronics guy so I don't know what boards do what. If you did replace a board that fixed the problem, can you identify it from the pictures you posted with your fist post?

                      Thanks for your help.

You may have a bad IPM if you heard a loud pop. Check the ceramic fuses on your sustain boards. You could have other issues, also:

If a sustain board is faulty, look for "coppelltvrepair" on eBay to repair your board(s) if you don't want to do the work yourself.

Still have the same problem after replacing the Power Supply, the Sub Power Supply and the Main Unit. I have a Visio Plasma P42HDTV10A that turns on and works perfectly for a few minutes and then turns off. I can immediately turn it back on and it will stay on a few more minutes and then click off. I can continually repeat this. Any idea what board I should focus on next?

I have the same problem as the original here. Tv comes on for a few seconds I hear a click then the screen shuts down and the power supply goes into standby.
