Sony KDL-32L4000 doesn't like to turn on

Hi, I have a Sony KDL-32L4000 LCD tv that really hates to turn on. I have to unplug it, wait until it clicks, plug it in, wait for 2 clicks then try to turn it on, and repeat until it turns on (usually takes about 8-10 tries), other than that nuisance it works perfectly, I am new to repairing or diagnosing tvs, and google wasn't helpful. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

The recommended practice is to open the TV and take a picture, showing the overall layout of the TV. Given the nature of the problem, a second picture of the power supply would be useful.

Try to get them as close to the maximum resolution of 2000 x 2000 as possible, and attach using 'Manage Attachments' (below the text entry area). Further hints on taking the pictures can be found in my signature.

The caps are hidden under the heat sinks, which further complicates the problem. Do any of them have bulging tops?

          Nope, none are bulging.

            Fiddlesticks!!

Well, here is another idea. In the picture, the power supply input is at the left, the output is at the right. It appears those three connectors are labeled.

I suspect the bottom connector is the one I am interested in. It looks like there are about 5 wires, what does the label say about each of the wires?

(If you haven't noticed, a decent camera would make this a LOT easier).

It's not labeled, but it seem to get bundled with the connector above it and then goes to the component/hdmi etc. inputs.

Re: Sony KDL-32L4000 doesn't like to turn on

Here is the opening lecture on troubleshooting 101.

The basic design of all LCD (and plasma) TVs is the same. The power supply is a dual supply - standby and main. The standby supply is live whenever the TV is plugged in, the main supply is switched on to turn on the TV. The main board has a small section that is powered by the standby supply. It's chief function is to monitor the control panel and the IR sensor. When the Power button is pressed it turns on the main supply, performs some rudimentary tests to verify the main part of the board is getting the proper voltages, and starts the main processor. IF any of the tests fail, it turns off the main supply. From your description, that is what is happening.

Now, the question is - is the main power supply producing the proper voltages, or does the main board have a problem? The symptoms (works after many tries) would indicate a power supply problem, specifically bad capacitors. You indicate there are no signs of bad caps, but I've had situations where the guy with the problem couldn't recognize a bad cap when he saw four of them. That is one of the reasons I ask for pictures. The pictures you provide aren't good enough. The only way to check that the power supply is working is for you to determine if the power supply is producing the proper voltages in the brief time the relay is closed. THAT means you have to identify every wire on the cables going to the main board, and check the voltages on them.

With those caps being under the heatsinks then I would lean toward bad capacitors as well. They do not have to be bulging to be bad. I have seen many power supplies like this that have baked caps that are not bulging. It looks to me like there are bulging caps under one of the heatsinks but, just so we are sure, if you have any caps that look like the ones in the attached picture then they are bad and need to replaced.

Sorry PlainBill, didn't notice this the first time, each individual wire is labeled, here they are: PS_ON, PWR_ERR_DET, 4VSB/1.2A, GND, GND (NO WIRE), GND (NO WIRE), 4VSB/1.2A, 4VSB/1.2A (NO WIRE).

Good. Now do the same for the other two connectors, please.

                        Also, note rayrod81's comments.

IMHO, it's not worth taking the power supply to a professional. The supplies are available on eBay for about $60, including shipping. A full set of replacement caps would cost less than half that. A professional would simply replace the power supply, charging a markup on the supply and also labor.

I re-checked every capacitor, no bulging out top or bottom, the other two connectors are as follows: 1. GND (X5 one without a wire) 24V (X5) 2. GND, GND (NO WIRE), PWR-6V, PWR-6V, GND, GND (NO WIRE), PWR-PANEL, PWR-PANEL, GND, GND (NO WIRE), PWR_15V/1.6A, PWR_15V/1.6A, GND, PWR_30V/2mA.

I would check if any of these pins rise when the power button is pressed. Use the associated GND pins as an indicator. If there are multiple adjacent pins with the same legend theya re all connected together, so just check one.

                            24V (X5)

                            PWR-6V (X2)

                            PWR-PANEL (X2)

                            PWR_15V/1.6A (X2)

                            PWR_30V/2mA.

I would also be interested in any changes on the following pins, especially PWR_ERR_DET

                            PS_ON

                            PWR_ERR_DET

                            4VSB/1.2A

LG 50PK590 - three clicks and steady red light, won't turn on.

                                        Hi all,

I've got a LG 50PK590 plasma TV which upon plugging in will click three times and the red LED in the corner will come on and stay on, the TV however doesn't come on (no humming, sound, video, etc.) and using the touch controls or the remote does nothing. On exceptionally odd occasions, the TV will come on and work normally when plugged in and will last about 5 minutes before going back to off and unresponsive.

I've got the back off of it and none of the caps stand out as visibly buggered, I've also tested the three resistors in the corner of the power board which...

Sony OLED XR-77A80J - 5 Flashes But Turn On After Hard Reset
                                        by odie34
I am a hobbyist (not a professional) so please be gentle...

I recently received an XR-77A80J that wouldn't turn on. (Repeating 5 flashes when plugged in.)

I did a hard reset by holding the power button for about 30 seconds until the set powered down. I then tried to turn it on and it powered up, bringing me to the setup screen. There's not a lot of detail on the setup screen but the picture didn't have any distortions, so at least a cursory examination suggests no physical damage to the screen. The set appeared to be working normally, but it shut down after about 15 seconds,...

Hello, i have some issues with my laptop Lenovo Y700-17ISK (motherboard BY511 NM-A541), it started when i turn on the laptop, but the lcd wont turn on, i then connected it via hdmi to tv and screen was ok. Conncted power supply and tuned on my laptop, the lcd turn on, it started to load os, then it turn off, after a second it turn on, then after like 3 seconds turn off again, and so on. Sony KD-49XF809y doesn't turn on
                                        by Zetabeta87
                                        Hi everyone!
I have a 2018 Sony kd 49XF8096 that suddenly stopped turning on: No LED lights up, and it doesn't respond to the power button or the remote control.
The power supply delivers 19.45vand I simply tried to check the fuses on the 2 boards (power and main) but everything seems ok. I have no references on where to test the voltage, but somewhere on the mainboard I also detect some, so you can't to understand which card may be to blame.
Can anyone give me some advice? I haven't found anything online

                                        Thanks so much!!!
