    Interesting E60-E3 (Vizio) issue

    Good morning BadCappers,

I picked up a Vizio E60-E3 yesterday. The donator claimed that it never powered on and that he checked Voltages at the power supply. I checked a handful of Voltages and then laughed when I realized I was trying to turn it on via the menu button on the back of the TV when its upside down on my TV repair bed (literally my guest bedroom).

Okay so I took out the mainboard and decided to flux up the BGA and heat it up. Upon reinstall of the mainboard the TV does indeed power up but all of the screens have a blue hue AND the video displayed fails about 10 seconds after it starts displaying on all of the HDMI ports I tried. If I don't place a video source on HDMI then it will sit there in menu for quite a while. The remote it came with is super lame as it doesn't have most of the buttons (seemed odd). So, waiting on a real replacement from Amazon today.

Anyone seen this issue before? Can I go into service mode and do some sort of full reset? Does this sound like a heat issue? I did put brand new paste on the sink. Maybe I'll try a small cooling fan from USB...

Thoughts from the experts who like to reply to these threads?

    TIA

When you see the backlights thru the little holes from the back, do any look blue instead of white?

Yes - they do look blue. That fact hadn't occurred to me... Not sure why that would be other than a powering problem with the strips.

UGH - a quick web search for Vizio blue LEDs yields a bunch of sites talking about bad LED strips. At this stage with the odd shutdown problem I'm not sure if this TV is worth investing any time in. The strips are CHEAP on eBay but not sure about the mainboard problem.

Can you hook it up to rca or just a tv antenna and see if it works ok that way?

Wonder if a universal remote would work.

I don't have one anymore. For $6 it was worth a gamble on Amazon. Besides I still have that 70" I fixed last month that I don't have a remote for. I mean I have Comcast remotes for power-on and volume but I do need one for menus etc...

So, with the new remote in hand I made a discovery. The mainboard has some sort of thermal limit. Even though I put new paste on the heat sink after I cooked the BGA last night, it still doesn't cool enough to stay on. With a house fan on high hitting the back directly it stays on for as long as the fan is running. Fan off, it fails in about 3-4 minutes. Going to look at active cooling unless anyone else has any suggestions?

LED strips are still blue but I'm not buying/doing the LEDs until I can get the TV to stay on for 12 hours at a time.

I'm guessing your "flux up the BGA and heat it up" reflow was not very good.

Pretty sure you're right. I've done it before and it worked perfectly. This time not so much. Waiting to see if I can get a board for a decent price on eBay but have lots of other real-life things to do until then.

A cheap thermometer with probe is less than $10, I'd get one and give the reflow another try.

Can the solder under the BGA survive three cookings? I apply flux each time around the edges. I have cleaned it from the outside but have not been able to clean it underneath of course.

If I did buy the thermometer where would I be focusing?

You put the thermometer probe tip as close to the IC with the BGA as possible.
There is no cooking, you are melting solder balls, i suspect it's not been hot enough for long enough but your thermometer should help you with that.
