thermaltake lasted 4 days after recap

This w0009 "rated" 420W psu has stopped working after recap, lasting 4 days.

When powered all fans spin very shortly and everything dies.

    I have +5.17V on 5VSB purple rail

    Caps list:
    1. teapo sh 16v 1000uf
    2. Nichicon PW 680uF ripple:1050 (replaced teapo sek 16v 470uF ripple:360)
    3. Nichicon PW 680uF ripple:1050 (replaced teapo sek 16v 470uF ripple:360)
    4. Sanyo WG 6.3v 3300uF (replaced jenpo)
    5. Sanyo WG 6.3v 3300uF (replaced jenpo)
    6. teapo ? 10v 3300uF
    7. teapo ? 10v 3300uF
    8. NCC KZE 16v 2200uF (replaced jenpo)

    I recapped all caps except C6, C7 & C1

C6 & C7 are used on red line rail

I'd start by checking for shorts. In my experience, this is common PSU behavior when something is shorted to ground - tries to turn on, but the protection shuts it back off. Check both the PSU and the motherboard. I frequently see broken USB ports from users forcing things in, the plastic housing breaks, and shorts the +5V in the USB port to the housing, which is ground. I'd imagine a short inside the PSU, whether it be from a loose screw, an accidental drip of solder, etc would show similar symptoms.

hmm... the rating looks inflated, those heatsinks look a bit small.

try unplugging one device at a time (hard disks, optical, floppy...) and if that ain't it, then try a different psu, the short may be in the mobo.

The big C8 was peeled off a bit by the external case and was in contact with it.

After fixing that the contraption was powered and surprise... power and smoke too!

With my naked eye, I don't see burned components except the fine engineered plastic film used between components
who was next to a resistor (you can see it at the top of pic 2 between the trans and the heatsink)

Attempted to power it again , no smoke, 5.11V and 12.32V readings.

But after 1 minute of power it switchs off instantaneously.

        Waste of time.

The time has come to buy not a thermaltake power supply

The problem is the PSU , I tested it with 2 working mbs.

My test includes only mb, cpu, 2 ram modules and 1 external case fan

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair
          by momaka
Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

IBM NetVista Pentium III - USI Motherboard w/ Teapo SC
          by iMic
          Hi folks,

I have a couple of IBM NetVista desktop computers from around 2000-2001. They have Universal Scientific Industrial (USI) Pro286i motherboards, 733MHz Pentium III processors, and a whole bunch of bad Teapo capacitors. One board has visibly bad and venting capacitors, while the other doesn't look too bad so far.

The board with venting caps works fine, while the good looking board occasionally refuses to power on unless it's left for about 30 seconds after connecting the power - even with a known good power supply. (I am however aware I'll need to check the PSU...

          ASUS P5GC-MX motherboard recap
          by momaka
Here’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.

So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

no-name Radeon 9600 XT recap and cooler
          by momaka
I've been seeing a lot of cheap-looking (but not always so cheap) no-name AGP video cards on eBay for a while. They started popping up quite a bit when the market for AGP cards became more alive all of a sudden due to interest in “retro” PCs. One thing that struck me about these cheapo cards is that they almost always seem to come with garbage caps - including the abominable Sacon FZ. That aside, though, I've been wondering about the rest of the quality (or lack of?) on these cards. So I decided to satisfy my curiosity yet again.

This one was actually suggested to me by ChaosLegionnaire....

Looking for someone to recap Dell XPS T450 motherboard (Live in suburbs outside of Philly)
          by varunviolin007
          Hi guys,

I’m looking for someone in the Northeast to do a full electrolytic capacitor recap on a working Dell Dimension XPS T450 motherboard (it's an Intel 440BX, Slot 1). The board runs mostly fine but is beginning to freeze after warm reboots (turns back on for 30 secs or so and then freezes up but is perfectly fine after 12 hr cool down).

I’d be sending just the bare motherboard (CPU, cards, bracket, battery all removed). I’m located in Chadds Ford, PA and happy to ship within the US.

Looking for someone experienced with older PC boards who uses...
