    Blown Sparkle FSP400-60GLC

Have two blown Sparkles suffering from same problem. Both have blown fuse, the active power factor correction MOSFETs are blown, and the primary capacitor is both open and bulging. The capacitor looks like a general purpose variety. Considering that part of the charging voltage comes from the PCF circuit, I am wondering what kind of capacitor would make a good replacement.

What caused such a massive failure? Certainly seems more than just the primary cap going bad.

      Panasonic - HB
      CDE - SLP
      UCC - KMG

      >>What caused such a massive failure? Certainly seems more than just the primary cap going bad.<<

Not at all. Shorted cap takes out the FET's.

Edit: @ Everell - Bridge okay? Fuse saved it?

He said both caps were open though?

        Maybe just got mixed up?

          Re: Blown Sparkle FSP400-60GLC

Bridge OK on both power supplies.

Both had primary capacitor bulge at top. On LCR meter, both indicated very low capacitance down in the nF. Ohmeter did not indicate short. Blue esr meter indicated both were above 99 ohms. They may have shorted but afterwards must have opened - perhaps blasted apart!

Toasty - what was your reason for recommending these particular series of capacitors? I am thinking that active pfc requires that primary capacitor will need low esr capacitor because it must handle power controlled by pfc circuit - which is switching at about 100 Khz.

i have seen this forming a pattern in apfc units.
first in a dual g5's psu and now in a few odd ones one being an industrial unit from yaskawa/motoman.
seems we need to replace known crap brands here too....

The OST SP(E?) & CapXon LP you show are nothing special. The spec sheets show them about the same ~2A ripple. Nothing as far as impedance listed.

Power across that cap is right off the bridge IIRC from some reverse-engineered schematic awhile ago. The boost comes in before a diode ahead of the cap.

My choices are based on experience with those 3 series.

umh everell, you're going the wrong way, i would say.
these caps were not cause of the issue, more like the consequence of riot in the a-pfc circuit...wether it was external voltage spike, or something internal made a-pfc circuit go mad, is a good question, though...

there is something weird going on with particular ups units and particular a-pfc designs
                https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...light=chieftec
dunno if this case can be traced back to such event, but i really, really doubt caps on the primary are the reason for these events...

willawake had a case of a-pfc fortron blowing while on ups, if i remember correctly.
(better to say it went thru ups...we can't say was it running off the batteries at the time...)

                few things from linuxguru
                https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...-pfc#post28727
that also add to my experience of primary caps being blown only when spikes occur...

                we discussed a-pfc stuff here
                https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...-pfc#post60221

i would imagine there are some chances a-pfc chip is shot too....
there was some good pdf on a-pfc i linked here a while back..hm...

here's the "reverse-engineered schematic awhile ago" toasty mentions
                https://www.badcaps.net/forum/attach...achmentid=8770
it's in the thread i linked above.

shorted C7 can't blow the fets, according to it.

The two 400V electrolytics are of the snap-in type (25Wx46L), so use two Nippon Chemi-Con SMM 330uF 450V units (they have slightly better ripple current ratings than the originals). They are 4mm longer than the originals, but this should not be a problem.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

                    by momaka
                    Deer diary,

I have an Allied AL-D500EXP (SL-8500BTX) PSU with a blown fuse (T8AL), blown primary BJTs (pair of 2SC3320), and a blown 12V output rectifier (SBL4060P). What happened? – Idunno. But I suspect the PSU was loaded with more than it could handle. Given its built quality, which I made a detailed post about here (with pictures), this power supply is probably closer to being capable of no more than 300-350 Watts max. The system it was powering, IIRC, was an older and more power-hungry Intel i5 CPU bundled with a Radeon R9 290/X GPU, so the PSU was likely running right...

LG 47LB5DF blown power supply board
                    by cmlewis89
                    Hi folks,

I'm new to this forum. So my trusty 17-year-old LG 47" LCD recently died. As I was booting it up, I heard a hum followed by a loud bang, sounds of pieces flying around, and loss of power to the unit. Inspecting the PSU, I saw two obvious problems: a blown thermistor (bang + flung pieces) and a visibly bulging main cap. Inspecting as many components as I could with my Fluke MM, I diagnosed that the following components on the "hot side" of the board were also bad: one of the 2 main MOSFETs, main 8A fuse, small cap (25V 47uF) connected to main caps, and a blown...

Panasonic P42S30 Plasma - Pink sparkles
                    by Lintesir
My parents' Panasonic P42S30 died recently, and they asked me to have a look at it. I was able to identify the SN-board as the culprit, as it was shorted. After removing Q401, Q402, Q421 and Q422 the short was gone, so I replaced these components and that got the TV working again. However, when testing the tv a bit, I noticed quite bad pinkish sparkles on some colors. For instance the greyish bar on this forum seems to trigger it quite badly. I made a fullscreen test picture with only that color, with the below result.

There is about a 5cm high region at the top without any sparkles,...

This laptop had a shorted cap on a Vcore section. After replacement is works again. But there is still a battery issue.
The battery is HT03XL and with the built-in component test from HP, in the Power section, I get an error: Logic State: Calibration required (20), Charge state: Blown Fuse (42)
I have another same battery, also with error: Logic State: Very Weak (70), Charge state: Blown Fuse (42)
And a third battery TF03XL (looks identical) with error: Logic State: OK (0), Charge state: Blown Fuse (42)
All these 3 batteries are charging...

KingWin ABT-650MM 650 Watt ATX PSU [PCB: SW8835REV:A]
                    by momaka
For today's thread, I have a KingWin ABT-650MM ATX PSU. Official web page with the PSU specs is still up and can be found here:
                    http://www.rmac.kingwin.com/products.../abt_650MM.asp

I just can't help it when I see a broken / for parts PSU on eBay that's listed for cheap and looks at least somewhat interesting. Well, OK, I won't lie – on the outside, this PSU looks anything but interesting. It's a plain gray box with colorful “spaghetti cables”.

What mostly drew me into buying it is its 2x PCI-E power connectors...
