All those little caps were replaced with Mostly Rubycon YXF and one each of nichicon PW, and Panny FC. If it helps, the voltage on the 5VSB is very stable.

And before, those also were all low-ESR caps?

Hard to say, since all the ones before were CS and Canicon with no series I could go by the ESR, but who knows how much it has changed in 10+ years

          Typo, I meant low-ESR.

          They really have no markings?

You can't go esr higher than YXF and FC. The whining is not due to the caps being too low esr.

OFC you can, standard caps like Nichicon VZ, NCC KMG have higher ESR. YXF is only slightly higher than PW.

No markings on the caps whatsoever except 105C and early 2004 date codes. I thought that maybe the caps needed to be "broken in" so I let the PSU run over the weekend, but it's still whining. It's a high pitched whine, and can only be heard at certain angles. Could it be something ridiculous such as it not being grounded properly, or a bad joint somewhere? All I can think of that I changed on the PSU is trimming leads, readjusting PG/PS_ON wires, redoing some blobby joints, and changing the caps.

I would check all those things that you mention.

In my opinion a psu that has problem with YXF/FC and needs higher esr caps to function is not worth bothering.

Yeah, it's a nice PSU though. Bizarre issue. Your Linkworld is similar, does it do the same thing?

I have many Linkworlds, one of them makes whining sound. It's from 5vsb circuit and I think it's because I used Panasonic FM for critical 5vsb cap.

Why? You can still get high quality capacitors that are not low ESR, surely. If it works and lasts a long time, what's the problem?

My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

The XP-360L actually looks less cheap. Looks like the caps are the only big issue.

One big advantage of these cheap units is they are SIMPLE. They are just like the small wall chargers, just with bigger transformer and silicon, but build exactly same way. In 90 % cases only caps go bad, than you change them for japanese and you are done for next decade. Sometimes rectifier or transistor, but that's all.

Higher quality units may have slightly better efficiency, may have slightly lower ripple, may have somewhat more precise voltage control, but that is achieved by incredible field of dozens SMD components and complex feedback circuitry. Thus they are more expensive and when go bad, you are usually finished. Especially the modern flat units which have more glue than air inside, you cannot do anything inside even if you wanted.

Obviously it's under-designed. It hasn't even been a year, and look how discolored the PCB is, and caps failed already.

I wouldn't be too worried about that, it just looks like they used really old and cheap SRBP board, which starts out dark brown to begin with.

The voltage is stable on the multimeter. I don't care to make it silent. I can't tell you if it is oscillating and how much though...

                                            by JimBanville
The sub developed a constant popping every couple seconds from woofer and power LED flickering with nothing but wall AC connected. Connecting an audio cable didn't change anything. It doesn't play but a second or two of audio in between the pops.
Opened it up and discovered the power supply is making a faint clicking or ticking sound.
I measured the amp's output to the woofer and it pulses up to 50mv DC to be driver. The pulses coincide with the power supply ticking/clicking.
I measured the power supply output going to the amp board and it too has this pulsing. Voltage cycles...

More Lo-Fi speakers and another DIY surround repair. The patient this time: a pair of Philips F9217L-50R speakers from a budget Philips rack/component system from the '80's. The system belongs to my brother in-law… or actually his parents. However, they didn't want it when they moved houses and he liked it anyways, so he ended up keeping it. It's a pretty cool-looking vintage system with a wood/veneer cabinet and shelves for records and cassettes. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to take a picture of it or get the model #'s (but maybe next time I visit, if anyone is curious?)

Boston Acoustics fans, this thread might not be for you.
A few years back (~2018 time frame), I picked up a set of free JVC speakers from someone on Craigslist that no one seemed to be interested in. The guy also had a single Boston Acoustics HD8 speaker – yes, just one cabinet. He said he had no idea where he got this one from or why it's only by itself. But like the JVC speakers, it was going to get tossed at the end of that week… so I came to collect, as usual. And that's all I know about this HD8. After all, I figured why not take it and see what's inside… show it to the...

DVR camera recorder switching power supply capacitor failure really

These cheap non brand capacitors at it again

Last night we had a power outage [ long drawn out trying three to come back up before going out completely ] and when I went to turn the DVR camera recorder back today no go 3 bad capacitors ( one capacitor no ESR reading on DVR board the other 3 capacitor on the power supply board over 40 ohm this is not a misprint ) on the external switching power supply and one capacitor on the DVR camera recorder board where the power supply that goes to the hard drive disk is

Well at least I have the cameras back on line I to try the...

DVR recorder Switching power supply Failure
                                            by sam_sam_sam
When I originally started with my DVR recorder it had 4 individual switching switching power supply’s that were sh*t so I bought a 7 amp 12 volt switching power supply and modified the output plug and put a four output power supply cable to match the input power supply cable inputs

Which worked for over 14 years until a few days ago when the cameras went dark no picture anymore well it turns out now the switching power supply has stopped working altogether now so I have to troubleshoot what has happened to this power supply more later on today what I found
