Re: 42 Watt LED Yard tare down recap ** How good is this switching power supply
We had a lightning storm yesterday and the other fixture does not work so I need to take that one apart to see what has happened to it
I will post a photo of the other 42 watt LED yard light they are both the same exact model
Here is a really shitte thing that did on this switching power supply the out caps are 220uf@50 volts there are four of them
The output voltage 42.5 really they could have use 63 volts one or 100 volts
I changed them to 63 volts onesLast edited by sam_sam_sam; 07-15-2018, 01:07 PM.

I don't see how the LED board is bolted to the housing, for heat transfer.
Some cheap chinese fixtures just use the silicone grease. The LED's burn up.
It uses the silicone grease and lot of it
It uses 6 screws to hold the LED Plate module to the housing
It uses off brand name China made capacitors

so do most of the thrue-hole parts on the psu!!
other than that, it looks good.
nice layout, input filtering, ncc caps.
If I get the one that does not work right now fixed and working again
I will get all the resoldering done on both of them I will repost a photo of themLast edited by sam_sam_sam; 07-15-2018, 01:03 PM.

Yes they are nice lights and been used for about two years now with these China brand capacitors which I am surprised that it has worked this long
They go by the Honeywell Lighting and were sold at SAM Club I have not seen them sense the summer of 2016
You can find them at

This is the capacitors that I used four of these ELXZ630ELL221MJ25S. ( LXZ ) 220uf@63 volts
I also used two these also ( LXZ ) 47uf@50 voltsLast edited by sam_sam_sam; 07-15-2018, 04:16 PM.

Here is one of the chips on the backside of the board
https://cdn.badcaps-static.com/pdfs/...1fdeef964c.pdf
The other chip is a LM358. On the chip it just says ( 358 ) ST
The Optic Sensor is a EL017 on either side of the optic sensor there is a 47uf@50 volt caps
Where the rectifier are the soldering joints were very questionable also I pulled them out and checked them they had a 420 mill volts one the diode test mode
Look like they might be good but the area where they are mounted looks like it has gotten very warm before because it is brown looking
This is On the one that does not work I remove the transformer and found some very questionable soldering joints on the pins where the wires are soldered
I going to replace the the two 47uf@50 volt one and see what happens next
On the Heat Sink it has this

I was able to fix the yard that did not want to work
I remove the transformer from the board and resolder the wires on transformer it self because some of them looked very questionable reinstalled transformer
I frist replaced the two 47uf@50 volts and put power to it and the LED module turn ON
Then I installed the four 220uf@63 volt caps and put the unit back together
I did redo the soldering joints that looked very questionable
I am very happy that I was able to fix this unit
Running time now 20 minuetsLast edited by sam_sam_sam; 07-21-2018, 09:42 AM.

Remember that they used no name capacitor in this switching power supply
I used automotive type capacitor in
So it should last a lot longer

Re: 42 Watt LED Yard tare down recap ** How good is this switching power supply
I have done testing on brand name capacitors before and if they are good the different in ESR reading (cold 50* F to 90*F warm or more ) is only a 0.05 or less
Now on no name brands and high ESR value reading it can be like this (+ 1.0 or more)

Did a burn in test over night and it is still working in the AM
As far as I am concerned it is repairedLast edited by sam_sam_sam; 07-22-2018, 06:36 AM.

Update unfortunately both of these yard lights had the same issue some of the LED light bulb do not light anymore on the panel and one of light fixtures the switching power took a really bad shit and is not worth repairing it so I bought new ones to replace them so only one of them the switching power supply still works if can find another 42 to 48 volt led module to use it in otherwise it just there for parts
The ones that I replaced them with I had to recapped them because they used some no name brand I never heard ofLast edited by sam_sam_sam; 12-16-2023, 08:17 PM.
