unknown chip in power supply section of dsl router

I'm trying to figure out how does a dsl router power section works.
It gets 12v DC from a wall wart, which gives about 17v when unloaded. When it's connected to the router PCB, there's almost 15v on the connector.
The next recognizable device is a 5v voltage regulator (ST 78M05), which seems to get a bit more than 12v as power input. In the same area there's an 8 pin smt device labeled as follows:
    ST 063ec
    9424
I can't figure out what it does. There's bobbins and electrolytic capacitors in the area, so I thought it was a PWM controller, but when I saw that what I confused initially with a power transistor was actually a voltage regulator.

This is chopper regulator through this bobbin (coil). Measure the output on other side of coil away from chopper to the ground with voltmeter. The capacitors smooths out the ripple that PWM pulses creates via this coil.

The newer routers seem to be using switching regulators rather than the conventional linear regulators.

These regulators (which are basically SMPS DC - DC converters on a compact IC). Emit much less heat that means smaller heatsinks and less heat inside the device.

The amount of external components they need is minimal too since most of the circuit is contained within the IC.

I think I will start to mock up some circuits with these soon.

Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.

          Thanks for your answers.
PCbonez is right. That's exactly the part I was talking about.

The modem router in question is an Aztech DSL 305eu, based on the conexant roadrunner chip, 2MB flashrom and 8MB RAM. This configuration used to be quite popular here before they installed ADSL2 DSLAMs.
With the right firmware, it's quite stable. If bricked, it can be brought back to life with a simple procedure (reflashing through usb connection), and the firmware update involves no danger of bricking the device.

Guide to transplant MEC1503 EC chip and EEPROM reprogamming for T14s gen 2 and X13 gen 2
            by acedogblast
This is a guide that I am writing for helping others to replace their MEC1503 EC chip if it breaks (or to get around an inconvenient prompt to the BIOS). This forum has been extremely helpful to me so I would like to contribute to help others. I will tell you right now that this task is very difficult to do. You MUST have experience and tools to do precision micro-soldering, BGA reballing, trace repair, and general laptop repair skills.

There are some specialty tools needed to do this task. The replacement MEC1503 chips can be acquired from Aliexpress. Do not buy the bare chips as...

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
            by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

            Assuming...

Why does my ISP router hate my "homemade" power supply??
            by double_DD
            Hi all,

It's gonna be a long intro, so please buckle in, as it's a problem that's been bugging me for several days now. Thanks in advance.

So, I have 2 modems/routers, whatever the proper nomenclature is, one from ISP and one mine. I want to power them via USB-C rather then their original mains adapters (for reasons, that are hard to explain to sane people). Both routers come with 12V/3A mains adapters.
For this purpose I acquired USB-C charger with 250W and 5 ports, 2 of which can supply max 20V/3A. Since 12V isn't a standard PD voltage option (and to future proof,...

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
            by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...

A: If you can`t read from it how do you expect to write to it ?.

Q: Why is my bios chip unreadable ?.

A: The programmer is faulty or has a worn or broken zif socket.

The USB cable is frayed, connector pins worn or some other physical damage.
