    Thermaltake TR2-550 PSU Busted

hi guys, thanks for coming in my thread! Anyway, just recently my PSU(Thermaltake TR2-550) is not working and when i opened the PSU casing, unfortunately i found a busted ceramic caps(covered w/ rubber) located between the two filter capacitors (820uF) as well as the fuse also got blown. I believe there's a component that is shorted in this PSU.

What are the possible cause of this damage? Can it be fixed?
If anyone has the same experience in this PSU, please do share.
I appreciate any help around here. Thanks!

      Photo please.
I think you might be looking at MOV's and not caps.
You won't find a schematic, they aren't publicized.
I'm not 100% sure but I think that PSU is built to the same reference design as Antec TP2.
There are plenty of threads around on those because the cheap Fuhjyyu caps Antec used cause them all sorts of problems.

        I think PCBONEZ is right

        .

The only ceramic cap I saw busted was in my LG TVset, it is used in a snubber network.
In PC PSU I have not seen till now a CERCAP busted.

Post some pics if you can.

those are mov's so 1 of 2 things happened.
high line voltage or you lost the neutral on your panel or drop.
someone hooked it to 220 with the switch in the 110 position.

I just recently found out that it was plug to 220 with 110 settings.
I thought this expensive PSU have a good design for protection.

It does have a good design for protection.
The MOV's died to save the motherboard, processor, RAM,,,,,,, from the user. [ahem]
That's what is supposed to happen.

As to fixing it all you can do is try and see.

                  Hi Sir,

I've just replaced the mov and the fuse, however, when i did a test by shorting the black and green pins it seems that theirs no power co'z the PSU fan is not spinning, but the PSU LED lights-on showing orange which means standby mode. I likely believe that the PSU has a power since it triggered the LED on, or maybe does my testing procedure is incorrect?

                    Hi jdimpas,

maybe your PS need a minimum load to start. If you have an hold hard disk, CD/DVD player, you can try to connect them and see if the PS start.

                      Gianni is correct.
Some PSU's won't start at all without at least some load.
