reliability is probably simillar to simillar priced seagate models.
That's my drive I bought it from Newegg too but I bought it when it was around 135 early last year.

    How fast prices drop.

I guess I better backup my important data. I have read some bad reports on WDs.

I have always thought about hard drive failure now and again. Any hard drive can crap out on you at any time. That's why data backup is imporant.

I hope that they get out of this slump I have used them worry free along with Segate for years.

Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.

I don't want to brag, but it sounds like I'm the only one here with a Maxtor that's lasted 8+ years (not 24/7 though). So far, that HD has gone through 2 bad PSU and still works fine. First bad PSU to go was a JNC made by L&C in my PII computer. That PSU had absolutely nothing inside. Probably had horrible ripple on the DC outputs. The second bad PSU was the PowMax I mentioned in my earlier post on the previous page. Ripple on the 5v and 12v was so bad that my Maxtor didn't even want to spin up at boot. But now I have no problem whatsoever with the Thermaltake TR2 430W PSU... well besides the high pitched noise (by the way has anyone thought what could make that noise?).

But I agree that Maxtor is probably not a good brand. My cousin has one of those 50 GB slim lines or whatever they are called, and that thing gets over 50C regularly. He's getting read/write errors constantly so he now uses that HD only for junk storage.

        what slump?

do you have a sampling of 1000 people all of which had wd drives and percentage of fauilres is higher than seagate's 1000 people?
        or at least 100?

if not, then you don't have a slump.
then again, newegg reports say wd is better than seagate: less problems with more units sold.

backup, yes. external hdds are my backups.
        don't trust any hdd.
but still, wd is better than maxtor, and better than seagate since seagate took maxtor.
with wd you have better chances of drives lasting longer.
        that's all: better chances.
never trust any hdd 100%. it can die at any time.
