Need assistance with capacitor selection for Set Top Box power supply.

    Hi All,

I'm recapping a digital set top box power supply and have to replace the following radial electrolytic caps.

    1000uF 25V x3
    470uF 16V x1
    1uF 50V x1
    33uF 35V x1
    220uF 16V x5
    47uF 400V x1

As i'm located in Australia, the only places that source good quality caps are Farnell and RS. I've decided to go with Farnell as they stock the quality caps as listed in the sticky. So far my order is as follows:

    1000uF 20V ( Panasonic FC )
    470uF 20V ( Panasonic FC )
    200uF 16V ( Rubycon ZLH )
    33uF 35V ( Rubycon ZLG )

However I'm having difficulty acquiring good quality (actually I'm having trouble identifying them!!!) radial caps for:
    1uF 50V (I've so far selected Rubycon RX30) - http://au.farnell.com/jsp/search/pro...sp?sku=8126984
    47uF 400V (I've so far selected Rubycon BXA) - http://au.farnell.com/jsp/search/pro...sp?sku=8126810
    Are these ok?

    Thanks for your help!

    Regards,

Well no idea on set top boxes

1.10 for 1 uf 50 volt gee they stick it to us dont they

OK usually Low ESR for PSU use FC here probably fine
(there has been a case with a DVD player psu were low esr cause it NOT to work so the type of psu may be affected by the caps used)

ZL series was for switcher psu the H/G are probably some variant miniature or something like that

Now normally when you get to 1 uf there's usually no need to worry but using a quality cap isn't a bad idea....it really depends on what the caps function is

The mains filter cap doesn't have to be of the highest order and I've read some actually replace with a larger value cap 100uf

lastly, not in all cases do you need to use low ESR caps,
a "quality" GP series may do just fine for the job.

normally you look at whats there and find something in a quality brand thats around the same specs or an order better.

Not knowing the circuit or the limitations on size etc
and from the pdf sheets I think what you got would be ok
(RX30 might be a little over kill)

If you want better opinions maybe post a photo of board or at lest what brand model it is

    Welcome and HTH

    Cheers

Panasonic ED series is a very very good series for high voltage applications, though not cheap (order #: 9696504).
On the other hand, you can choose any 105°c GP capacitor too at this location.

For the 1uF i would say Nichicon PS series is not bad (order #: 8813086).

Thanks for your replies, I went ahead with my existing order.
I didn't realise ED series were good, but next time i'll keep that in mind.

Recap was successful and the STB is back in action!
