Are you absolutely sure it wasn't the way the transistor blew a hole in itself while also flaming the nearby capacitor? Cause if the cap blowed, it would be either from top or bottom, never side. Side is made from not-that-thin aluminium in a shape of can.

The cap may actuall be fine, you'll just need to strap some tape around it to isolate the can.

I wasn't sitting there watching it happen, so it is all guesswork, really. It seems pretty odd that either one of these things managed to blow a hole in the other!

Maybe because the cap is bigger and it has a bigger hole in it, I jumped to the wrong conclusion. Here are some pics of the chip.

But uh... I don't think I would use that cap again unless I was in a real pinch! Taped or not!

Maybe. The dual rail concept may not have been popularized yet, though. I bought that PS in 2003. I don't remember it being sold with claims like that.

I think it is the transistor that blew out first. I've known them to melt pits in heatsinks before when they blow out. I don't think it would have too much trouble melting the thinner aluminium of a capacitor.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

We have gotten off the original topic here, so I will go back and try to rephrase my question...

If Samxon caps are OK and superior to CapXon, Fuhhjyu, etc. just where can I get some to put in my PS? I mean, I need a 3300uF 16V 10mm cap and this site no longer stocks anything like that and I CANNOT find anyone else selling SamXon. Are they still in business?

Behemot on this forum (look a few posts above) placed a custom order at Samxon for them and has 10mm capacitors

He sells them at a fair price too. They've come in handy for me on some projects

                  Anyway, here's the list.

Thanks! I don't see a language dropdown on that site and I don't know the language. How are the shipping charges to US? And what is the exchange rate?

                      by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                      Assuming...

                      Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps
                      by eryjus
                      Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."
                      ...

                      Asus Probook P5440UF-XB74 power issue
                      by GLISIT
                      Hi all,

TL;DR - this laptop is driving me nuts with the oddball power-related behaviors. Appreciate any insight you can provide!

I'm experiencing a power issue on an Asus Probook P5440UF-XB74. Although I've worked with electronics and computers for decades, this is my first attempt at getting into motherboard-level component troubleshooting. Any help the community can provide is greatly appreciated!

A few weeks ago I was using the laptop (on battery power) for a Zoom meeting. The battery was running very low (long meeting) but I wasn't worried about...

LG 42LB5D, 42LB5DF-UL, 2008-01, Power On Issue, Replaced PS Caps
                      by bcstedt
LG 42LB5D (42LB5DF-UL) from 2008-01, unit is in good shape and no obvious heat damage or cracked solder on the boards.

                      Problem:
On first power-up the power LED flashes green about 18x and then stays solid. No backlight or image is present. Click power button, wait 10s for a click and the LED turns red. Wait 1-2s and hit power again and maybe it'll power up fully after 6 green flashes. If it doesn't light up on the sixth flash then the cycle repeats.

It seems that if the mainboard power is left on for a few minutes (solid green power, no backlight, no image)...

Help with switching power supply caps
                      by captain150
I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...
