  • Re: CapXon replacement

I had a couple of CapXon in a power supply as the input filters. I replaced them with UCC KMQ series, but of course that was a different situation. they were 100uF 200V. Keep that in mind if you decide to replace all of them.

  • First shot at MB recap. Ugh!

I have done some recapping in the past (power supplies and old stereos) and thought I was pretty good at it so am thinking of recapping an ASUS A7N8X motherboard. I've got one of these that's worthless and one that can probably be recapped, so I thought I would try removing some on the bad one. Just to see how it goes. Per the advice here.

My soldering station is a Hakko 936, which is 65W, and I figured it would work fine. It seems not!

If these caps have pads they are so small as to be almost invisible. At one point I became convinced there was no actual pad, just solder...

  • Re: Dumb question about CPU die surface

Thanks for explaining. As I think about it, I DID see some resistors like that once. I was putting together a tester kit and it had some of these resistor packs....

  • Re: ASUS A7N8X: can't save to CMOS!!

    Today's problem...

...is that I set the CPU speed back at it's rated value (the one in there now is 1.6GHz) and whenever I would do anything memory and CPU intensive, like reading in a set of JPEG's to convert them, the system just stopped (i.e. it shutdown, no reboot, just dead). It did this twice in a row at about the same point, so then I slowed the FSB and CPU down, then the shutdowns stopped.

The cleaning definitely seems like a good idea. Contact cleaner, toothbrush, compressed air. I don't smoke so...

really? you sure? take a look at this pic - it shows more detail. They have eight pins each. never saw resistors like that before....

  • Dumb question about CPU die surface

I feel dumb asking this question, but I have Googled for a while with terms like "CPU surface" and "details of CPU" and all I get is performance comparisons.

I want to know what these things are on the top of a CPU. Obviously the B items are some kind of chips. So any info you guys can share with me would be appreciated. See the photo and take your guesses!

I used to think that those C items were additional heat transfer points, but when I check with a straight edge I find that they won't touch the heat sink - they are just a bit lower....

Here's another update... just 3 hours later!

I was browsing around here and looking at people's comments about recapping, etc. and someone said that maybe the heatsink compound was shorting things out on the surface of the CPU, so I took off the heatsink and noticed a SMALL amount of compound that MIGHT be a problem so I cleaned the thing up with alcohol. I honestly didn't expect this to make any difference, but much to my surprise I got the splash screen!

At this point I had ALL the drives disconnected, no network,...

I suppose I wasn't real clear initially. I would go into the BIOS setup by pressing DEL right after the POST. I make changes and tell it to save. Upon rebooting, I get NOTHING - blank screen. From experience, I know that I may have set the CPU too fast, but I try again by just setting some on/off option and it still does this.

    Now, here is the lastest:
After reseating the BIOS chip, I was able to make changes and get booted, but this didn't last but a day. Then I tried to make some more changes, primarily...

  • Re: Comments on The Recapping FAQ

I have to agree with this. I have a Hakko Soldering station that got out of calibration for a while. I was recapping an old stereo system and I burned up a couple of pads before I realized what was going on. It had to be up around 400 degC. Of course I haven't dealt with computer motherboards yet, but I just can't see setting the temp that high because I have been able to desolder everything fine at lower temps....

  • Re: ASUS A7N8X: can't save to CMOS!!

Here's an update: I got things working again by swapping the EEPROM chip from the other board. I think maybe after ten years the contacts get a bit of corrosion. Luckily (or unluckily?) that chip socketed.

Any ideas on THAT? I know this has nothing to do with caps now, but since I'm here...

  • ASUS A7N8X: can't save to CMOS!!

This seems too weird to me. Around a year ago I couldn't save the CMOS settings, it kept forcing me to pull the battery and reset to defaults. But when it would run, everything else was fine. I swapped out everything one at time to isolate the problem, including the motherboard, but when I put in a new power supply, the problem went away.

But wait! It turned out I had a Seasonic PS (supposedly bad) and when I pulled the motherboard cable out of it and reinserted, then put it back in the case, the problem was still gone. So I decided it had to be some weird minor corrosion on the cable...

Thanks! I don't see a language dropdown on that site and I don't know the language. How are the shipping charges to US? And what is the exchange rate?...

  • Re: Elna caps for power supplies?

We have gotten off the original topic here, so I will go back and try to rephrase my question...

If Samxon caps are OK and superior to CapXon, Fuhhjyu, etc. just where can I get some to put in my PS? I mean, I need a 3300uF 16V 10mm cap and this site no longer stocks anything like that and I CANNOT find anyone else selling SamXon. Are they still in business?

  • Re: Opinion Poll: Bestec power supplies

From an ideal air flow point of view (aesthetically too), I have always agreed with this and have tried that once or twice. In practice, however, particularly with temp-controlled fans, I don't think it actually makes enough difference to make it worth it....

Maybe. The dual rail concept may not have been popularized yet, though. I bought that PS in 2003. I don't remember it being sold with claims like that....

  • Re: Elna caps for power supplies?

I wasn't sitting there watching it happen, so it is all guesswork, really. It seems pretty odd that either one of these things managed to blow a hole in the other!

Maybe because the cap is bigger and it has a bigger hole in it, I jumped to the wrong conclusion. Here are some pics of the chip.

But uh... I don't think I would use that cap again unless I was in a real pinch! Taped or not!...

  • Re: Cooler Master GX 620w (rs-620)

My Antec PS died in pretty much the same way. At first it would just stop after a few seconds, but then on the second attempt it would start OK. (The Antec did not have a red LED, though) I am going to guess the either the PS or the motherboard decided that the power was not OK somehow and aborts. Over time it got worse and worse until it wouldn't start at all.

Is there a standard cause associated with this symptom? Or maybe too many possibilities?...

The Antec TruePower480 had Rubycon 1000uF 200V filter caps. see pics.

Any idea why one of these would just blow a hole in itself? It was kinda dramatic. Resulted in burning a hole in a nearby power transistor!...

  • Re: Elna caps for power supplies?

No, I am not sure at all! It's pretty hard to get the schematic from just looking at traces. It does appear that there is an inductor right there. My point was that where the first PS had just a single 3300uF 16V, the Antec had two 2200uF 16v right next to each other, suggesting that they probably had 4400uF on the 12v output. Exactly how, I can't be sure, and like you say messing with this stuff can result in worse performance. I had thought *maybe* I could put the two 2200uF caps in the other one, but it's a lot of work to get...
