YESICO 500 Problem

Hi,
I have a YESICO 550 which had been running in my PC 24/7 flawlessly for about 10 months. However I returned home one evening to find my pc off and it wouldn't turn back on. I connected an old power supply and it powered up fine.

Yesico Symptoms
Powering on I get a split second of power and it shuts down. I cannot reproduce this split second of power untill I pull the power lead out of the pc. When I do this I can suddenly hear a faint whine for about a second or 2, like something shutting down.

I sent the PSU back to Scan Computers in the UK where I bought it as it was still under warrenty, but they found no fault with it and powered up a 24 pin motherboard with it. My board is a 20 pin so when I received it back I plugged it into a my work pc with a 24 pin board and it worked fine. I then plugged it into 2 other 20 pin boards and it had exactly the same failure. I sent it back to scan computers requesting they test it on a 20 pin board. They tested it on 2 20 pin boards and it worked fine.

I now have it back and it still won't work on my pc, although my old power supply has been working it fine for the last month.

Any ideas or suggestions ? I have emailed Yesico, if they get back to me I'll post up what they say.

Well I'm off work sick at the moment so after browsing round this site for a while I thought WTF and opened up the Yesico. Most of the capacitors are bulging, none are split or leaking (though one is suspect I can't get a close enough look at it). I'd post some pics but my camera won't focus close enbough. So I guess this is the problem with it on my mobo ? (I also checked my mobo, caps are all fine).

The caps in the Yesico are all Fuhjyyu so best thing is to try and get this recapped as I doubt I'll get the warranty on it now that I have opened the unit up, not that theres much point getting a replacement if it's just going to do it again.

I don't think I really have the ability to do this myself (never soldered anything) so I'll see if I can find someone to do it. Any suggestions on a brand for replacement caps ?

Basically any low ESR cap with correct capacitance and voltage value from known good manufacturer is ok for a PSU. See the good capacitor thread for an up-to-date list.

I've been using Nichicon PL/PM series and lately Panasonic FK series in my psu's and not a single problem yet. FK series is nice for tight spots as they have smaller diameter than eqiv. Nichi PL/PM. I personally use PL/PM where they fit as I got a quite large pile cheap some months ago. If I had a good source of Panasonic FM I'd be using them.

I have the same problem as you but I managed to get it going by unpluging all leads and switching on and off a few times I have now e-mailed Yesico and await a reply. My motherboard is a Asus P5WDG2-WS

Well, this may be will work a few times, but in the end it either will dammage the other system component (board, GFX and HDD) or it will die with the changse of catastrophic failure (e.g. some burning and Arcing and by by hardware).
So if you like your hardware and your data stored on the HDD, i would suggest to rethink about this kind of solution.

Recapping a PSu isn`t that hard, a cheap but powerfull soldering iron and some basic clear thinking and you will got it. Any way, just empty the high voltage caps by waiting a few hours with disconected power cord or in pulling the cord during it is powered on. But i would only recap it, if the psu is otherwise well build. If not, throw it away, and buy something like Seasonic or FSP.
