Re: Another dead Antec SP-450
Since you have two units with presumably good components (other than caps) could you look at my post at thread here and post the component values (one diode) I'm looking for?Re: Another dead Antec SP-450

Re: Antec SP-450P caps
I just got SP-450P free. It was replaced because of squealing noise. Knowing what to expect I popped it open and took a closer look. Surprisingly all output caps are visibly ok, but 1000uF/10V caps in AUX PS are bulged. Also one of two line input caps seems that it might be bulging, so I might replace input caps as well to be safe.
Then I spotted two burnt components. Diode (pos D5?, glass) is burnt and the glass is broken so I there's really no way to know what kind of diode it was. Another burnt component is a resistor. It is also burnt beyond...

Re: Are Sparkle power supplies good?
Jamicons at the 12V line seem to fail. They've been bulged on every FSP I've laid my hands on.
About the dummy load resistor, it's "normal" they run hot. Usually the heat shrink is badly burnt and breaks into pieces when touched. Sometimes the resistor itself has cracks. I've never replaced them, just carefully tilted away from caps to minimize cap heating.

Re: YESICO 500 Problem
Basically any low ESR cap with correct capacitance and voltage value from known good manufacturer is ok for a PSU. See the good capacitor thread for an up-to-date list.
I've been using Nichicon PL/PM series and lately Panasonic FK series in my psu's and not a single problem yet. FK series is nice for tight spots as they have smaller diameter than eqiv. Nichi PL/PM. I personally use PL/PM where they fit as I got a quite large pile cheap some months ago. If I had a good source of Panasonic FM I'd be using them.

Re: what on earth can this connect to?
Just make a simple converter circuit with max232 or equiv. chip. The circuit is quite simple, just few caps and the chip. Example circuit schematic is in the max232 ic datasheet. (PDF file, see page 17.)Re: what on earth can this connect to?

Re: Best power supply you've had
I really like the build quality of Sun Microsystems Enterprise 450 PSU. I think it rated a little over 600W. And you can fit 3(!) of these PSUs in a single E450 chassis! Mine has just one installed and the system draws only 100W on idle. The PSUs are hot swappable. I'll take some pictures the next time the server needs a reboot.

Re: Antec TruePower 2.0 series?
I've been seeing quite a lot of bulging teapos in Fortron (300W and 350W passive PFC/12cm fan, cannot remember the model number) power supplies lately. The bulging ones have always been light-blue colored and usually in 12V line. I have not spotted any failed dark green teapos in a psu...

I use mostly Nichicon PL/PM but just got some Panasonic FKs for places requiring smaller can sizes.
Has anybody got a datasheet for leaded type Panasonic FK?Re: The Good Capacitors Photo Thread

Macron Power MPT-301P
Looks pretty much same as the DTK above. Original caps were same brand except for the input, mine has Fuhjyyu
Recapped output caps with Nichicons while I was at it. Did not have scope or ESR meter to check originals with, but none were visibly at fault.
This one had a bug inside as well. Nicely charred between ip lytic contacts...

Re: The Great Capacitor Showdown - Rubycon vs Panasonic vs Samxon
Oh crap. I have one of those powers running in somewhat critical server. It's a dual xeon with quite a lot of scsi drives so the psu is being taxed. It has been running without problems for a year already but now you made me a bit worried.
Could you please list cap values and physical sizes? I'll be ordering replacements for this one asap. I don't want this server to go belly-up anytime soon.

MSI 694D Master-S recap success
Hi!
Just wanted to show what I did last night (till 3am). The board has been now running stabile for about 10 hours with both cpus and 768MB of memory. Before recap it crashed in a hour and detected random amounts of memory each reboot. Now it detects correctly every single time.
Caps:
5xChhsi 1000uF 6.3V -> Nichicon HD 1200uF 10V
3xChhsi 470uF 16V -> Nichicon PL 330uF 50V (not best suited)
2xChhsi 100uF 16V -> Nichicon PL 120uF 25V
3xChhsi 100uF 25V -> Nichicon PL 120uF 25V
1xTayeh 1500uF 6.3V -> Nichicon PM 2200uF...

Re: Power supply build quality pictorial DISCUSSION
I recapped one FSP350-60PN yesterday. It had bulging 2200uF/16V fuhjyyu on 12V line. It also had one jamicon and the rest were teapos. Unit had been running about two years when I decided to take a look inside. Recapped all output caps with nichicon pl. Also replaced the 35V cap in controller board supply voltage (aux output cap) with somewhat larger 50V cap. Hopefully it's ok now for an another couple of years.
I also bought a nexus 350W silent ps for a home fileserver project (that was about the only thing available...

Re: Power supply build quality pictorial
Here's aopen 300W W/PFC that came with HQ08 case. Big o/p caps were 1 jamicon, 1 fuhjyyu (bulged and leaking) and 3 teapos. Replaced with physically larger Nichicons without much effort. Input caps were teapos (and will be as I dont have replacements for i/p caps).
Hi-res pictures and more are available in http://sourapple.dnsalias.net/photos/?album=60 as always.
PS. The 380W Antec mentioned above is now working again. Recapped with Nichicons exept for i/p caps.Re: Power supply build quality pictorial...

Re: Power supply build quality pictorial
Here's a couple of pictures of Antec TruePower 380SP with covers removed. I've done enough reading and I'm about to begin my recapping career with this. I bought some (500pcs) Nichicon caps, mostly PL(M) series, to begin with so there is more to come
Edit: Oh yeah, this beast is all-Fuhjyyu as Antecs tend to be.
Hi-res pictures and more can be seen here:
