    Coil as shunt??

I am quite often seeing two +12 V like-a-rails or also +,3,3/+5 V rails with coils instead of resistors shunts. There seems to actually be feedback from before and after the coils to monitoring IC.

Can this work? If so, is it any precise or just so-so? Reason why I am asking is I always though the high-frequency AC ripple part of the DC will change the coils reactance so much effectively making it's useless as shunt (resistor) Or it does not?

An inductor only attenuates AC current. However, most inductors are imperfect and have resistance. If wire length and resistivity is known then the current through the inductor can be measured. It means you don't need a shunt resistor.

I know, but I mean, can it's apparent resistance change with ripple? Cause with usual wire, I guess not, but with the ferrite core which increases inductance by a great margin, I think there may be some changes. And as the resistance of shunts is usually at miliohm level, just a slight change can cause very different readings…

HP Victus 15-fb dag3pamb8d0 Short on VCORE – How to Confirm CPU Fault?
        by adelfr2009
I have a laptop HP Victus 15-fb with motherboard DAG3PRMB8D0, CPU Ryzen 7535HS, and GPU RTX 2050. The laptop has a power issue: it does not turn on at all, and there is no light on the DC jack.
After inspection, I found that an NMOS near the charger input had a short. I replaced it, but the short remained on the 19V line. I checked the charging circuit and it was fine, but the short appears after the current sense resistor near the charger. The charger does not pass current when connected, so I inject 3V–4V after the sense resistor. No component gets hot, except the CPU which becomes...

Power issues with HP pavillion 15 eh1815nd
        by Rik vb
        Hello,

I have some issues with my HP pavillion 15 eh1815nd.
It doesn't wanna power on anymore, when i click the start button it briefly turns white, then the light goes off again.
The charge light is indicating that it's charging when i plug it in.

I did some tests accross the board, and found 2 (coils?) near the CPU, one of the small (chips?) next to the bottom coil seems to get unusually hot, and the coil shows quite a lower resistance then the coil above.
Most/all capacitors next to, and below the bottom coil seem to be connected to ground on both...

        Hello everyone,

I recently picked up a laptop that was about to be thrown away to try to repair it. I've tested quite a few things, but I don't know where to look anymore. Could you please help me?

        Brand: Asus Vivobook
        Motherboard reference: x421da, Rev 2

        Context:
The person who gave it to me mentioned it might have been exposed to water, but they weren't sure. After opening it up, I couldn't find any signs of water damage or oxidation on the motherboard.

The first thing I did was to connect the PC to a power supply: 19V stable and...

How can I test coil whether it is really broken or not?
        by chth96
I have old game console which have connected to 220v outlet by previous owner and It is not able to turn on.

I checked continuity of fuse in PSU unit with a multimeter which is shown in the below picture with a orange circle around it, and It seems that fuse became open circuit.

I also found that as well as bulging capacitor, there is unidentified coil which has residue all over its surface

I want to replace this round black fuse and unidentified coil if it got broken.

HP Probook 455 G8 charging but doesn't turn ON
        by double_DD
        Hi all,
Unfortunately I cannot/don't know how to edit my last query, so I'll create another one instead.

So I've received this laptop to try and fix it. There were 2 blown components - small inductor and cap, both on Vin (main power rail) on the IN pins of the 0.75V chip (SY8388RHC). I've replaced that chip and the nearby 0.75V_DEEP_SUS (same type), and of course both of blown components. There was still a short on 3V coil, which went away when I replaced PI3DPX1207C chip next to usb-c port (as it was overheating). Luckily I have older non-working 455 G7 for the spare parts....
