Antec isn't the one putting Fuhjyyu in their PSUs... you'd have to go after Channel Well, the OEM actually building the PSUs with these caps.

Some truth in that OK Wolf but Antec has $queeezed CWT...Hard.
Not all CWT built units have fudge-yous in them...Do they?
I've had some heated open discussion with AntecCSR (cust.service rep.) on another forum. GRrrr! :-)

I have 3 of them sitting here - actual CWT labeled units. Nothing but Fuhjyyu in all three. Well, that's what they did have... two have been recapped with Chemicon and Panasonic. The third wasn't worth the bother to recap.

To be fair, I spotted the odd Capxon and Teapo in them too.

          Re: What are these caps?

johnny, in the typical two 200V caps in series voltage doubler circuit, if one shorts or is shorted by another component, the other will probably blow. In parallel with each of the caps is an MOV. MOVs gradually deteriorate, so if it was a P/S with lots of hours of usage, maybe one MOV shorted, causing the opposite cap to blow.

            Re: What are these caps?

Well in my opinion it is absolut no point if CWT or other PSU maker are using same crap caps. But as i can see, the major brands in high end PSU`S are all at least using Capxon or Teapo, which is not perfeckt but far more better than any Fuhjyyu crap, which will fail realy early (but probably not obviousely, as more ripple will be tolerated for some time by the other caps in usuall PC system, degrading them ).
I understand, that for an 10$ factory left psu like most oem units probably are, there is no marging for good caps (regardless of the manufakturer), but in an 120$ unit which will be advertised to high end systems i have somhow zero tolerance for that practise.
And even in many cheap FSP oem units, i`ve got from ebay new for about 20€ there are at least Teapo or Ost caps in, which for me had never failed up to now (except some Ost at the 5v SB on most Seasonic SS300FS to SS400FS) in an well build PSU.
I feel not mutch sorry for Antec there.
And i hope, that Seasonic will earn the honor for their good practise. Even if not all of those S12 units has Japaneese Caps in there (at least Teapo), they at least not are failing that often and early like Antec.

              Re: What are these caps?

Well, apparently Fuhjyyu/Antec is notorious around the world.

I saw a Wintech built X2 PSU with Fuhjyyu primaries (Koshin secondaries.) I flipped out and asked him how he could let Fuhjyyu's into a build.

His response was the same as you guys:

              1. The primaries rarely fail unless provoked by another problem. In which case, any brand cap would fail.

              2. (And he said this without me mentioning CWT or Antec) Wintech has pre-assembly quality control that checks each component for proper value, etc. So caps are tested for leaks, proper uF rating and are ESR tested. CWT components are unpacked, put directly into bins and handed to the ladies for assembly ("Women are easier to control." I love that quote.)

Despite this, I still told him to make sure any builds I request have at least Teapo, but preferrably Nippon Chemi-Con. But seeing how it's taken me four months just to get a PO cut for my 800W PSU that still won't see the light of day for another month, I wouldn't expect anything spectactular out of me in this decade.

Adding that my Channel Well ~350w PSU (CompUSA 400w, 15a 12v) is all Teapo inside.

Do even the newest Antecs still have Fuhjyyu? You'd think with all the warranty returns that they'd go to OST at least...
You know there's something wrong when you open up a PSU and are glad to find Teapos.
Why I don't buy cheap cases!

Check the photos of the TP2-550W PSU above. Not even a year from manuf date and all Fuhjyyu's on the secondary.

I'm cool with Teapos in a PSU. I would think if Antec wanted less problems and want to continue to use a manuf that doesn't do pre-assembly QC that they'd use something that had lower RMA to begin with.

Teapo's far from perfect, but they're WAY better than Fuhjyyu.

If they're using 10s of thousands of the caps a month, I'm guessing that they're sample testing - a few from each box - not 100% testing every lytic they use. Whether sample testing or 100% testing, that would have to be an incredibly bo-o-o-oring job (though it would beat passing out resumes).

Yeah. I'm sure it's sample testing.

And yes... still a boring job.

But htere are some options to let a maschine do the job. Any manufacturer will do this for a addiitional price tag. Any cap will be formated with elektrizity (for wich they have to conected to two terminal), therefore ther are lineups to make 100% automatic testing.
E.g. Frolyt is selling any maschine for any purpose thesting caps. If you order from them caps, you can specify the whole setup of production, 100% testing too. But of course, only in quantities and not at the rate any Fuyhio crap cost.

Good to know. So the only physical labor is probably loading up a hopper that drops the caps into place.

The hoper could be a monkey , but some money has to spend to either pay for the testing or buy the machine assemlby.

I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

                              Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

                              Hello!

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

I have studied the board and...

I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...

                              Gigabyte GA-6OXT :: caps question
                              by Foetuss
                              Good evening

I recently aquired a rev 1.1 Gigabyte 60XT, and was suprised of the amount of leaking caps for a motherboard of the P3 era. Especially the way the 330µf caps seems like the housing discolored even.
Now, there are some 3300µF 6.3V KZG series around the CPU. Would it be OK to replace them with something like EEUFR1A332 ? (Panasonic FR 3300µF 10V). Or was this board designed around very low ESR caps?

But I was also suprised about the bigger boys, which are 330µF 25V.
Could it be they used 25V caps because they were cheaper / available at that time?...
