    Old and new PSUs

I have an old Dimension 2400 (onboard graphics, CD-RW drive, 3 PCI slots, upgraded from 2.4 GHz 'Celery' to 2.8 GHz Northwood P-4), 1 GB RAM, XP Pro SP3 license.

It starts and runs okay Fileserver, learning machine, basic surfing, whatever. Would it be a good idea to recap Dell's stock 200W PSU? For the heck of it?

And what about that new OCZ Fatal1ty 550 PSU I got recently? Rumor has it L-Tec and/or Teapos are used in it. Wait a few years and then recap it?

    Just wondering what everyone thought.

Depends on who made it and what's inside.

Most of Dell's PSUs are either Delta, LiteON, or Chicony Power (HiPro), all of which are very decent. The caps in these usually consists of a mix of Ltec, Teapo, Taicon, Su'scon, and CapXon. They are not great brands but they do okay in these power supplies because they are well designed.

If your house doesn't get excessively hot, I would suggest you just clean the dust inside it and make sure the fan is running good. The PSU will likely outlast the useful life of the computer.

Wait until the warranty is over before it is recapped, they are designed to last that far at least.

I void the warranty on almost every PSU I get my hands on.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards
