the heat of the resistor is the issue. so thats why I'm thing to go with a non-lytic

    maybe high-esr poly?

High-ESR is what causes the 5vsb of those 2-transistor PSUs to go kamikadze in the first place. If anything, you should use a LOW ESR cap in that spot.

With that said, I don't think you'll find a suitable polymer cap for that. High-voltage (as in 25-50v) polymers aren't as common as the lytics, so they are more expensive. Also, polymers tend to be fat and short compared to lytics - so you may have a problem fitting one in there (provided you do find one at all).

A high quality electrolytic cap should be fine if you don't want to do a DM311 mod.

I did that for an old Deer PSU that I'm currently using in a Pentium III computer. After recapping the PSU, 5vsb came up exactly to 5v. That PSU is actually pretty decent, though, as there isn't that much heat in the 5vsb circuit itself. I've seen some other PSUs where heat really is a problem in the 5vsb section and a DM311 mod is the only way to go.

FYI, i found the 2nd thread on the orignal topic (600w xfinity 5vsb fix). the discussion is now there

reason I siad high ESR was because poly caps are so low esr that a high esr is just like a GP lytic more or less... but this discussion belongs in the other thread.

RTX3090 working fine but fans not spinning
          by emil_t
Hello guys. I have a problem with a PNY XLR8 GAMING RTX3090 graphics card. The problem is that it displays and works fine, but the fans don't spin at all. The problem occurred when someone else removed the fans in order to clean it and broke one of the fan connectors. He replaced it himself and after that, it wasn't working anymore. I guess he damaged something else in the process. What i have done so far: I found 2 capacitors next to the connector that were in a bad shape, he must have touched them with his tools - they weren't shorted, but i replaced them with similar ones from a similar card....

          Asus Strix-G15-G513RM fans don't work
          by b-slayer
          Hi everyone,

I have an Asus Strix-G15-G513RM, who starts normally, but as the fans don't work, it stops and is really really hot,
The Bios was the latest one, (327), but I managed to downgrade it to version 325 to see if it changed something,
(as I read somewhere that a corrupted bios can explane my problem), but nothing, it just went full blow during the downgrade,
(so now, i can say that the fans are fonctionnal), but as it restarted, the fans won't turn at all again.

ah, and in the Bios, even when the temperature is really hot, the fan are a 0 rpm,...

Hot Water Rad - A Few ECU Fans and a Timer Switch

          Good Afternoon, Good People.

I know this will be an elementary little project for most if not all of you, but I thought I would write a post and get put on track, rather than bumbling my way through it with all kinds of trials and errors.

I REALLY would appreciate y'alls help.

This is the problem - My wife and I purchased a big ol Victorian/Colonial House in NYC two years ago. The kitchen is surrounded on 3 sides by exterior walls, there is also a 1/4 of the kitchen floor (ceramic tiles) that has a crawl space underneath, and the kitchen gets FREEZING cold...

Onkyo A8200 - Not the right voltages in some transistors
          by Francesc V.
          Hi:

I am trying to repair this amplifier that I've bought as faulty. I've found some transistors damaged, the ones where I am drawing a red circle.

With the final transistors not yet installed (the expensive ones), I've started to measure some voltages:

Where I am supposed to have 1.12V (base Q524/Q523) I am reading -42V..................both channels don't seem ok.
Where I am supposed to have -1.12V (base Q526/Q525) I am reading -44V..................both channels don't seem ok.
I removed and tested Q514,Q516 & Q513,Q515 but the analyzer...

Sundown SFB-8000D What are these transistors?
          by redbaron1007
I had a Sundown SFB-8000D amp come into the shop yesterday that wasn't giving any output. The guy who brought it in said he bought it off some crack head on Facebook marketplace for a good price, but bought it knowing it was broken. Apparently the original owner was cutting out the transistors to the right of the ones pictured whenever one would blow and take the output out. Best I can figure he also cut the legs on the S5 and S6 ic's as well and soldered them back together.

My problem is Sundown decided in the factory to remove the original markings on the IC's and now I can't figure...
