Given that the battery charge LED is on - what is the voltage of BQHIDRV ?

This pin is connected to the GATE of the high side mosfet @ PQ36.

What voltage do you measure @ PL8 (either side) while the ADAPTER & BATTERY are connected ?

This is the battery charge voltage.

Battery LED went from amber to white suggesting it was fully charged but the laptop still wont boot on battery alone.

What is the voltage you see on the battery connector ?

Measure the voltage on each pin of the battery connector -> interested in the SMBUS data line voltage as well.

Ok so im getting 20.8V on BQHIDRV.
on either side of PL8 i get 1.028V

Battery pin voltages are as follows
pin 1 = 2.87V
pin 2 = 2.87V
pin 3 = 0.852V
pin 4 = 3.36 V
pin 5 = 0.00V
pin 6 = 3.3V
pin 7 = 0.00V
pin 8 = 0.00V

Not sure where to measure the SMBdata line. i took a measurement on either side of "PD1" and got 4.4mV and 0.0V

Remove all power. Remove PD1 off the board.

Attach the battery and adapter. Measure the voltages again on each of the battery pins.

Post all readings.

with PD1 removed i get the below.

pin 1 = 1.007V
pin 2 = 1.010V
pin 3 = 0.002V
pin 4 = 3.33 V
pin 5 = 0.00V
pin 6 = 0.00V
pin 7 = 0.00V

Measure the resistance to ground of pin #3 on the battery connector on the logic board. No battery but only the connector.

The 0v is not correct. It should be 3v3. You may be missing a required pull up resistor on this pin.

There is another part on pin #3? Remove it for a quick test.

Post the resistance to ground.

Locate the pull up resistor for this signal on the logic board.

Check it's resistance and then, the voltage on both sides of the resistor.

This is a smbus line and it requires a pull up resistor to function. Appears to be missing or defective. This line must be 3v3 in the idle state not 0v.

Im not exactly sure what other part is on pin 3. is it PC10 that you mean? looks to be a tiny ceramic cap i think.

Sorry, again please excuse my ignorance but would that be PR1? if so, there doesnt seem to be anything on the board at that location and the pads dont seem to even have solder on.

1) do not worry about the cap on MBDATA line - your resistance is fine so that is not the fault.

2) the issue is that SMBUS are open-drain lines. When they are not active, the line is floating and an external resistor must be present to perform a soft pull-up to 3v3. This appears to be ok for the MBCLK line but not the MBDATA line.

Search for a resistor with label R182. Nearby should be also R190 which appears to be ok but R182 is not working here.

Post a close up pic of that region of these resistors.

With no power to the logic board, meter in resistance mode -> measure the resistance across resistor R182.

What is the measurement? It should be ~4k7 = 4,700 ohms. Confirm it.

R190 should be also a similar value.

If this is close, then apply power and measure the VOLTAGE on both pins of this resistor R182.

Both sides should be ~3v3.

According to the schematic, the same resistor should reach pin #3 of the battery connector.

Remove all power. Meter in lowest resistance scale.

Check the resistance from this resistor R182 to pin #3 of the battery connector. It should be ~0 ohms.

Check against the schematic. That is, the 3v3 on the 4k7 pull up resistor should also be present on pin #3 of the battery connector.

ok so if i measure the resistance from R182 to pin 3 i get 0.320 Mega Ohms which is obviously far from 0 ohms

Yes, PD1 is a surge supression device. After you place it back, measure the resistance to ground again but it does not appear that PD1 is defective.

Do note the orientation of the part. Review PD2 for guidance.
