    Finding comparable ferrite beads on mouser/digikey?

    I have an inspiron with "power rail failure" LED codes flashing, and have found a blown capacitor and ferrite bead (inductor, I guess...)

    I've found the replacement capacitor on mouser, but am unsure how to properly search for the ferrite bead. I have the schematics and boardview, so I have found the original bead part#, but the data sheet doesn't seem to include the information I need for the filters on mouser and digikey.

    For inductance, and a few other values it just says "Refer to standard electrical characteristics list"

    Any help finding an alternative would be appreciated, but tips on how to research this on my own would be even more appreciated.

    1) Post the details of what is mentioned for the part # from your schematic.

    2) Start with the physical size of the ferrite bead. This is a key parameter.

    3) The current rating should be equal or higher than what was used on the original board.

    4) The resistance is perhaps the last requirement - higher the resistance, the better the component to act like a filter at the specified frequency. You are wanting to block the noise with the higher resistance.

    These parts are more for EMI suppression so that the finished product can pass the FCC emissions testing. Not really a show stopper if you bypass the part but you may notice some extra noise in the room from such emissions which may cause bad WIFI / poor over the air TV reception, etc., etc. (kinda like my house).

    Post more details and can see if we can nail this down. BTW - There is also Digikey / Arrow for a supplier.

      On the schematic is says this, just above the diagram for the inductor:
      EMC@ PL600
      HCB2012KF-121T50_0805

      The boardview also says it's an 0805, and according to the data sheet, if I understand correctly the part number is HCB (series) 2012 (metric for 0805 I believe) kf (material) 121 (impedance 120ohm) (T = Tape) 50 = 5000mA

      On the schematic above the inductor diagram, in a different font and color, it says "7.2*1/.9/9=0.89A", above another inductor (PL1000) that has the same part# it says "1.05*2.9/0.9/9=0.375A"

      I thought it might be something along those lines. The schematic shows the ferrite bead bypassing the open jumper on the board near it.

      Yeah, I had digikey in the title and had tried there, but my lack of knowledge still prevents me from narrowing down a replacement I know will work. I think I can get the original part from aliexpress, but I'd rather not as long as it would take to receive.

        These are very low cost (aside from perhaps the shipping fee) - so best to source them locally in USA rather than offshore. Sometimes, you do not know what you are really purchasing as the vendor can bait and switch. As a manufacturer, we purchase directly from the factory and for ferrite beads / inductors, we prefer MaxEcho (0603 / 0805 ferrite beads) and King Core (EMI filters for our USB designs).

          That's the impedance (@100MHz) not the resistance. The resistance (DC) should be as low as possible.

            Thanks for the information guys. It looks like my biggest mistake was looking in the wrong category. (inductors rather than emi filters).

            I realized I had the correct capactior replacement on hand so I replaced that, and jumpered the connection for the ferrite bead and the laptop works fine as Mon2 suggested. So now I'll get that bead ordered.
