    ACER 4420-5963 No Power

    No power ...

This unit has no power or lights.

    Known good charged battery.

    Known good Power Supply.

What are some of the causes of this possibly:

Could an inverter board cause this issue?

Is there a fuse in the power circuit that craps out?

Could it be a voltage regulator on board?

Anything to look for I am open for suggestions...

    Is the power jack ok?

It has an internal contact that switches the system from battery power to AC power mode. If the jack is damaged that could cause this. Also check for any bad solder joints on the jack.

An inverter problem is unlikely the laptop would still boot and you'd be able to shine a flashlight on the LCD to confirm the display was still working.

Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.

      Good info so far...

As far as the Jack goes it seems fairly solid without taking it apart but I guess this is the first I ever heard that a DC jack could cause no power on with the battery itself?

If not the DC jack what would be next in line to check?

I will replace parts on the mobo and solder if need be...

      Thanks again

You are only gonna find out if the power jack is faulty by stripping it down..Power jacks are a big problem on laptops ...Just done a similar job on my nephews Toshiba ,power jack came away from board ..First time i ever done one as well and it went fine ( my soldering practice went well lol ) Nephews well happy ..theres loads of how to do it on youtube.. But this is the best place to get the right advice from some of the experts on here.

I am no expert I have only fixed 20 laptops or so most were DC jack repairs I just am curious cause I never found one with a jack problem that did not work with a known good battery surely I could be wrong and I've torn this model down as well. In some instances you can not even tell the DC jack is faulty when tearing it down I have learned that but I have never had one that would not power up with a known good battery and yes I will try the DC jack I already have it in my possession to tell the truth cause that was my first hunch then I got a known good battery and charged it as well still no lights no power on...

Aside from the DC jack what else could be a possible but common cause of a no power situation I have no problems soldering or taking the units apart at all I just am curious beyond that what other common problems are there?

          Fuses or voltage regulators?

DC Jack replacement no go... did not work.

Seen a cut wire and repaired that was a button.

nothing much more I could do really other then look for hours for this mystical problem so I am parting out my laptop seems to be the best way forward from here ....

            CR2032 replacement attempted...

            Battery replacement attempted...

            New Ram attempted.

oh well thread can be closed or deleted at will.

              Check 5V and 3.3V Stand-by. Probably missing.

i was given an acer extensa 4420 that has some issues. battery charges as the green light indicates but will only power on for a few seconds no image and from what i can hear the hard drive is attempting to spin up but it sounds like there is not enough juice to get it going then it powers off and i can repeat the the cycle with no luck. changed out the ram, removed and reseated the cpu, removed dvd drive, etc. any ideas?

well have done some research here..... i hadn't used this laptop for about 3 - 4 days and when i went to try it again it booted up just fine but battery was dead. i did leave the battery in the laptop, it which was totally discharged and it did charge fully, was able to surf the internet wirelessly, downloaded updates, installed some programs rebooted, etc...etc... BUT......when i went to shut down, normal shutdown, start button, turn off, etc. it would not power down. it wasnt installing updates, it just hung in shutdown status. i had to unplug power adapter and even the battery to get this laptop to power off? now im back to the beginning. power button pressed, a few lights for couple seconds then off. unplug battery no change unplug adapter no change...

                        any thoughts here....

laptop is working now! stripped it down to the bare board, replaced the cmos battery. now whether that had any thing to do with this laptop's issue im not sure, or that a ground on the main board to frame was outta wack, don't know?? but all is good now.
