    MacBook Pro 820-2262-A (A1261) intermittent MagSafe light

    Hi everyone!
    This is my first post here, I hope to solve this problem with your help. This is my first experience on this type of repair, so forgive me if I make some stupid mistakes.
    I have an A1261 17" MacBook Pro (820-2262-A) which has intermittent green light on MagSafe, and when the light flashed I can hear a click coming from the motherboard. The machine would not power on either via the MagSafe of via a known good, fully charged battery. SMC bypass does nothing.

    I checked some voltages and got a regular PP3V42_G3H (3.42 volts), a fluctuating PP18V5_DCIN (between 14 and 16 volts) and no PPBUS_G3H. Time to check for shorts.

    I initially found a short to ground on PPBUS_G3H, even at J6990 (discovered at Q5315), and started going backwards.
    I checked at U7950 and that was ok, I then checked at U5715 and found that pin 3 and 4 of U5715 were shorted to ground, thus shorting PPBUS_G3H via XW7904.
    I traced the short back through R7904 and R7906 and found that pin 21 and 22 (CHGR_CSO_P and CHGR_CSO_N) on U7900 are shorted to ground, thus shorting everything connected to them.
    Removing R7904 and R7906 (the two shorted rails are interconnected via C7902) eliminates the short on PPBUS_G3H and on pin 3 and 4 of U5715.
    Could U7900 be dead and internally shorted to ground? Should I remove it and check if I get no short (not the easy way) or try injecting voltage in some component? Any known bad component that may cause this?
    Thank you!

    This MacBook is well known for GPU failures.
    Avoid all MacBooks before 2012 with dedicated GPUs.

    Even if your problem might be something else your GPU is most likely dead anyways.... There isn't much you can do besides changing the GPU to a revised one which isn't worth it since the laptop is really old.

      Yes I know but I don't care. I don't plan on using it as my main computer whatsoever, and even if it fails I'll replace it myself.

      Do you have any suggestion on the component that may have failed?

        Check all "G3H" Power rails. These have to be always present.

          Macbook Pro A1278 intermittent orange charge light
          by tccyo22
          Hi there, I've got a Macbook Pro A1278 board code 820-2936-B in which I have a very strange charging issue.

          Backstory is when I plugged the charger in, it would give a green light and swap to orange like normal but after a few seconds would go off to no light, laptop still powered on and functioned fine.

          So naturally I replaced the ISL chip first which made no difference so I also removed and reballed the SMC. This seemed to fix the issue for about an hour until I was back to square one again.

          Decided to then take an SMC from another board, reball that...

          Macbook Pro A1502 820-4924-A - No Power/Charging Light
          by JasonC89
          So Ive got a Macbook Pro here with no power or charging light.

          I have taken the board out and did an inspection and found a small bit of water damage on C1267 (PP1V05_S0). Cap fell off as I cleaned the area but I dont think this is responsible for my no power or light issue, and should probably work just fine without it.

          So after watching a few Louis Rossman videos and some post here with similar issues, Ive done a lot of testing and have found the following values of the main lines I think are important:

          PPDCIN_G3H = 16.63V
          PP18V5_DCIN_FUSE = 16.63V...

          macbook A2918, orange light off when shut off
          by mosfetratus
          When i fully shut off mac, orange light goes off and wont react to power button. I have difficult time resetting with combination "shift+control+option and power button", because it rarely works (reason unknown), when i manage to get orange light and then press power button macbook wont turn on and orange light goes off. When i hold combination with power button it turns on, and works fine if put it to sleep mode.

          Works with battery and charges, but when i shut off i get this problem.

          It had liquid spill. Board has no corrosion, keyboard is working, power button...

          Macbook pro A1278 820-2936 No light/turn on
          by Adogabriel100
          Hey! how are you guys? i wonder if you could help me with this macbook 820-2936 that does not turn on. (Doesn't have green/orange light).

          History:
          this macbook came for a short on C6990 that blows D6990 and R6990 on his way. i re-placed the componets and it work again.

          A month later comes back again and has the actual problem (no green/orange light and dont turn on)

          The macbook can turn on with only the battery connected but in fact, dosent charge.

          Voltajes:

          PP3V42_G3H = 3.3v
          PPBUS_G3H = 12.2V
