I have some stuff here called Adhesive Remover that is quite potent and good at removing epoxy. I believe denatured alcohol is good too.

Heat did the trick! I was shocked. I went down, my wife was already heating it. I told her to stop and I covered everything with tin foil. We left to go to Autozone. They didn't have our part (they did, but it was set aside for someone who ordered it so we couldn't get it). We bought brake cleaner but didn't use it. I put the heat up to 500F and just put it on for a small bit of time. I thought it wasn't working yet. I went to put the pliers on it, just so when it got warm enough, I could lift it off, and it just came off, right then and there! I only had the heat on for maybe 30 seconds.

Now I gotta clean the stuff off the processor. I'm going to need to purchase some for when I put the new chip on. Any ideas what it might be called and where I could get some? Something that is thermal paste but would also hold it on like glue.

Now that we have the heatsink off, we need to remove the white stuff from the chip, to read what it is. It's an MTK (MediaTek) MT8202(something). That something might be important. The schematics says MT8202E, but on e-bay, I can only find an MT8202AG. I've tried other sites. Some place called Alibaba had some MT8202E's but wanted me to buy 5 of them for 50$. E-Bay wants 16$ for the 1. What's weird with the Alibaba site (might have been Aliexpress), when it was set to the French site, it found it, but when I set it to the English site, none available. Almost like they're showing different products based on what country you live in.

E-Bay has it from a China seller, so it can take a very long time to get here.

We tried 70% IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) and that didn't work so well. She switched to a bottle of Un-du she bought at her work. The MSDS for Un-Do shows the ingredients as Naphtha (Petroleum), Hydrotreated Light. Not sure what hydrotreated light is or how they store that in a bottle! Maybe they mean hydrotreated light was used on the Naphtha. So, essentially, it's a 4 ounce bottle of Naphtha at like 1000% the cost of Naphtha. We really need to purchase some plain old Naphtha. Wonder if Walmart carries that.

My wife ended up cleaning up the chip, it is an MT8202AG by MediaTek (MTK). From the service manual, it appears I'm going to have to download the firmware from the chip somehow and upload it to the new chip. Not sure how to do that if the TV doesn't turn on. That's for the TV repair thread though (I've been talking about it over there). Because this is the phone forum, aren't there a lot of MediaTek or MTK chips in Android type phones?

Has anyone used that MTKTool before?

Yeah, I went to Aliexpress last night and got the French version, occasionally I get the Russian version.
You want some thermal paste like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/CPU-GPU-Ther...-/141918232588
A bit thicker than normal thermal paste and it sets hard.

              i saw this online
              Upgrading with Mtk Tool

Mtk Tool is a green program need no installation. It is saved in the folder [MTKTOOL_20061027]. There are five folders/files in this folder altogether. The MtkTool using log is restored in the MtkLog folder. It records the running time and date whenever the tool is used. The log will be a txt file named by date and time.
After connecting the TV to PC, double click the MtkTool.exe icon, open the file. If any error appears, it means the related port is not set properly. Ignore these errors, click 'confirm' and enter the MtkTool main interface.

              Flash chip model.
The port through which the PC communicate with the chip.
              The communication baud rate.
The new program file (*.bin) for upgrading.
Click this button can select the *.bin file to be used for upgrading.
              Click to start upgrading.

Open 'Device Manager' and find which port is connected with the TV. Select the right baud rate according to chip model. For this unit; chip model is MT537X, select 115200*2. Where of not click the "Auto set Flash Baud rate" in the window menu depends on the chip type. If flash chip does not support, do not select this option; otherwise, reverse the selected mood.
Click 'Brows' button, find the upgrading program file and select it. Press 'Upgrade" and start upgrading.
After upgrade, 'Upgrade sucessful' massage will be displayed.

Sorry, what do you mean the French version and occasionally the Russian version? Version of what?

I was thinking something more like this:
                http://www.arcticsilver.com/cmq2.html

                Or this:
                http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_alumina.htm

I've used one of those before diif, I can't remember which one. It was made by Arctic Silver and I didn't realize that it wasn't really made for CPUs. It was a ceramique type of compound but it wasn't a permanent attachment. It was almost permanent, you know, it took a bit to get it off. I don't want something that will never come off, just something that would take a bit to come off, you know what I'm saying? That stuff you linked to, do you think that would come off with some pressure? That's the stuff I'm looking for. Something that isn't impossible to remove, just something that will hold it until someone tries pretty hard to get it off, just in case someone ever has to work on it again....

I've always liked the AS stuff, but if the stuff you linked to is better, I'll purchase some of that.

The French and Russian versions of Aliexpress.

Both of the compounds you suggest are for CPUs which suggests to me they won't set. Not what you want when the heatsink and processor are vertical.
AS do do a two part thermal epoxy, but the stuff i suggested works just as well and is a fraction of the price and easier to apply, squeeze from the tube, no mixing required.

Good to go. Have you used the stuff you're recommending before? If so, can we remove the heatsink later on if we need to, using heat like we did this time or something? Or is it one of those once it's on, it's on for good?

At this point, I think we're going to replace the entire board. The chip is around 16$ plus shipping. The board is around 21$ plus shipping. Just want to make sure the board is 100% compatible. I'm thinking if I'm replacing the board, maybe I'll pull the chip on this board and redo the solder balls, just to see if that fixes it, you know?
