    Winbond WPC8763LDG

Hey guys, I'm trying to repair my Toshiba laptop. I believe that the Winbond WPC8763LDG chip is partially fried. I have found a very cheap replacement here --> http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-WI...-/180815951085

My question is, do these chips have a programmable ROM? If they do what kind of chip reader would I need to read it and how would I go about that?

Any info and replies will be appreciated.

Most likely they read part of main bios when machine gets power. Have you tried to reprogram main bios?

I haven't tried doing anything to the main BIOS. The positive battery terminal got shorted directly to the batt_ID pin on the Winbond chip. The laptop powers up and starts to boot Linux but after about 8 or 10 seconds it just shuts right down. I can go into the BIOS and boot menu and everything works fine it is just shutting down after that 8 second period.

How an answer, on which enough time was spent, got completely ignored?
Even if it's no good, I thought one would communicate about that. Courtesy?

Wow sorry didn't mean to offend. I have a busy schedule and am still looking into the links you provided. I need to figure out what pins to pull where and how to hook it up. I am not sure if the information is extraordinarily useful or completely useless so until i figure it out i didn't want to reply with something I wasn't 100% sure on.

As stated in my first post all replies are greatly appreciated and I am looking into getting it to work. Again no offense intended.

Sorry, maybe over reacted. I did my best finding the right info, but that was difficult.
So I needed feedback if I was on the right track.
khaahk has a point too. I self don't know about programming the WPC8763 in this matter. By replacement one expect it to be handled by the system.

That's alright. I greatly appreciate that you took the time to search for me and I was never able to find that datasheet myself so thank you.

In my mind I was thinking that I needed to desolder the chip and solder it onto a breakout board so I could hook it up to a programmer, read the data from the chip, then solder the new chip to the breakout board, program it, then remove it and solder it back on the board. But the description in the ebay ad says that I should be able to hook it up to an interface on the board of my laptop and I don't know how to find such interface or hook it up.

"According the datasheet it only has 1K of on-board ROM. My guess is that this is a mask ROM containing a generic bootloader. Any machine-specific code would then be loaded from external Flash."

Another user suggested that it is loaded from external flash which backs up what khaahk said. So maybe I'm way off base and don't even need a programmer?

In the Ebay add, they use a MSI PC mobo with a SPI connector already present.
When you don't have that luxury, you must solder the wires to the corresponding signals on the chip. Don't solder on to the chip, but look for a resistor or capacitor connected to that pin. This for safety reason.

But the way things look, you probably right and do not need a programmer cause I would try first what the other user and khaahk said.

So basically order a new chip, whack it in there and hope for the best?

Well, I ordered a new chip, soldered it in and, well, it isn't what I hoped for. When I first plugged it in, absolutely nothing happened for about 3 minutes. Then, without touching it the indicator for being plugged in came on. I pressed the power button and the power light came on, the fan spinned up, and the hard drive kicked in. It even stayed on without turning off. The problem is the screen is completely black and there is no hard drive activity. If I hold the power botton for a few seconds it will turn off and I can turn it back on and it will do the same thing. Soo, what's my next move? I'm pretty confident with the soldering, I can attach pictures if needed.

                          Thanks

                            interesting pinout.
it seems like it may have an ARM cpu in it - it's got serial-jtag. (SWD)
if it is then it's probably got an internal flash.

depends, a lot of keyboard controller files are on the net,
sometimes they can even be extracted from bios updates.

So this chip is just a keyboard controller? Why would that cause it to not boot?

keyboard controllers do lots of other things too.
controlling power to lots of circuits for exampe.

i think you need a schematic.

                                          Hello All,

I have an issue with my Majority PETERHOUSE GRADUATE Internet Radio, it keeps rebooting at the boot logo Welcome screen. I have an another forum active in other website but due to lack of response I am posting the same here. I am positing a link below that has pictures including all the troubleshooting I have tried, appreciate if someone can take a look and give me any suggestions.

[LA-J891P] Warm cpu on 19v rail injection, is it fried ?

                                          Hi,
I'm learning electronics(already have some basics) by fixing a FH52M LA-J891P rev1B. It come from an acer nitro 5. The charger was defaulting upon pluging. The 19V rail resistance is 0ohm (I believe that caps screw my measurement). When i inject 5A, I get a rail tension of 1.3V, and 0.8V vcccore.
Except the cpu, I cant feel anything getting warmer.
I believe that it is normal, because the cpu is "eating" half the power I'm imputing.
I dont know if the cpu is fried, because I did not remove the big capacitor on vcccore.
I believe that if the cpu was fried,...

                                          Hi everyone,

I hope someone can help me.
I have an Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 (G814JZ) laptop with a Winbond 25Q16JWNIG chip on the motherboard.

Unfortunately, I flashed the wrong file (BIOS/EC/other region – I'm honestly not sure anymore), and now the laptop is completely dead: no display, no fan spin, no reaction at all.

I have a CH341A programmer and I'm able to read and write to the chip. However, I'm not sure which software is best (AsProgrammer, NeoProgrammer, etc.) or if there's anything specific I should watch out for.
                                          A valid BIOS/EC backup...

Fried capacitor on Dell-5520. Guilty as charged.

While installing new SSD's in my new to me Dell 5520 laptop, I dropped a screw which sparked and fried a capacitor. Yes, I know I should have disconnecte the battery first Doh!😡. The laptop runs fine, but I want to replace the capacitor asap. I ordered and received the replacement (10uF, 25V 0603). Since I also managed to burn up one of the pads it was soldered to, my main question is whether it is okay to solder this capacitor on top of another capacitor (same size, same function in circuit). Specifically, PC4428 is bad and no way to easily solder to the board. I would like to solder it piggy...
