HP 8460p won't wake up after sleep, needs hard reset and restart

    Hey folks,
Fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 on an Elitebook 8460p. This model has an i5 vPro 2520 with an AMD 6470M GPU. I put a 240GB SSD in there, and decided to do a fresh and clean OS install. After the full install, with all of the drivers and firmware of the HP support site as well as a BIOS update, I have a really annoying problem.

Whenever the laptop goes to sleep, and I subsequently try to wake it up, it only partially wakes up. The power LED illuminates and the fan kicks on as if it were on. The wifi indicator LEDs also come on but only in orange, as does the mute button. The HDD access LED kicks on for a second when you first try and wake it, but then shuts off.

This issue is really annoying, and I've researched a ton how to fix it, but to no avail. I've read that tons of HP laptops with AMD cards have this issue, but none of the solutions people had seem to apply to me. Many mention an issue with the switchable graphics and using older Intel drivers, but the 8460p doesn't have a switchable graphics option in the BIOS or in catalyst converter. Also, I can't seem to install ANY intel graphics drivers for this CPU or the HD 3000 so I'm assuming it's locked out by the AMD card.

    Any help?

    Thanks,
    Alex

Ok, well, after updating the BIOS, which didn't fix it, I restored the BIOS defaults, which did. Computer now works fine. I wonder what setting that worked with my previous install doesn't work with my new one.

Guys, I really appreciate you chiming in, seriously, I do. But if you look at my second post, I fixed it. I reset the BIOS to default settings now everything is fine. It's weird that it worked with those settings on my previous install, but not with my new install. Whatever, it's working now. Thanks though!

twas the bios update not reading CMOS the same way as before. the update should fix the bits in CMOS, but not always. like if you jump 4 versions it may not. that's what ive found anyway with the thousands of computers i've refurbed, BIOS update being a standard process of the refurb.

I would agree, but the problem existed preBIOS update. I flashed the BIOS to try and fix the problem.

CMOS corruption is also common, though, i see it mainly with Dells dimension line and crappy gateways.

Never had the pleasure of coming across it. I will say this though, while most laptops and PCs are fine with a quick reinstall of windows, and maybe a few drivers off the manufacturer site, HPs are always the biggest pain to get running. They hate fresh installs. There is always a problem of some kind.

If the lid is closed or the system is put into sleep mode for more than 30 minutes or so, then when I try to wake it back up by tapping a key or by tapping the power button I get no response. The device is warm but the CAPS lock light on the keyboard is unresponsive. To get it to reboot and be functional again I have to hold down the power button to force it to power off, then when I press the power button it reboots normally. I erased the system and reinstalled macOS to do a factory reset, and the issue still persists. I replaced the logic board and the issue is resolved with a separate known...

A1286 with 820-3330 sleep wake failure in efi, battery drains fast
                        by colos85
                        Hi,

Let me share you a story that could be useful - not just with this model mentioned.

                        Symptoms:
                        - Battery drains fast, 20-25% a day while sleeping.
                        - As soon as it runs flat Mac turns off, like normal.
                        - When hooked on charger starts twice (two chimes), then boots normally, but a message appears in the OS "Sleep wake failure in EFI..." The exact message already lost, but many things can cause this as I saw, so wont point out the source of the problem.

So I changed in pmset the standbydelays to 100, and hibernatemode...

                        Hello,

I have a problem with 820-01987 that has no backlight when wake up from sleep. before there was water damage around U6903 and backlight caps. no corrosion found so i just clean it up. is there any component that in charge for enable backlight after wake up from sleep mode?

                        any suggestion would be appreciated.

Asus PA279Q wake from sleep and power issue
                        by sugarfoot
Hi, my display no longer wakes from sleep. Half the time it won't power on at all. It also occasionally flashes black, white, red, blue, green and says "press menu and shortcut 2 to disable burn in".

It's a great monitor, I hate to give it up without a fight.

Are there any service manuals for this display? How do I disassemble it and see if there are any blown caps? Thanks.
