    Medion mim2300 fan mod

Hello folks, this laptop has some serious problems. Namely bios won't allow to change the speed of the fan.
Well that would be fine except for 1 thing.
The f****** bios only takes the CPU temp (which is <60) and turns down the fan speed. While the poor nvidia is cooking.
So I had an idea, to destroy the white (regulation) wire, and short directly 5V to fans red wire. In theory that would be 100% fan speed non stop and the Medion wouldn't overheat (yes the dB would be insane but who cares headphones and rock it).
    What do you people think?

P.S Just to say that no bios allowed me to change the fan speed.

Yep you shouldn't have a problem with this, other than premature fan wear. 5v from a USB line should do the trick.

Yea but at least i would have usable laptop. But one thing triggers me. If i cut the white also known as the regulation wire, wouldnt i have non stop 5volts from the fan output circle.

        NO.
        5v fan, yes.
but dont mess with the 3rd wire.
        it's not a regulator - it's a tacho feedback.
if you cut it, the bios will think the fan has failed and shutdown the machine.

          Re: Medion mim2300 fan mod

yesterday i try to write about it and the notebook from work keep crashing. stupid mac

          nvm

the 3rd wire usually white or yelllow its 3.3v
when its 3.3v its on 100% spin. to lower the speed it lowers the voltage.

you need to do some testing and see how much voltage is when its off middle and so on.

i saw a mod on ytube when they use a switch to put the fan at 50% and 100% ofc by a resistor. it will not be so hard actually see how much you need for this so 5v on the 3rd wire?
          HELL NO!

p.s. if you want 100% just connect a 3.3v from a fet and your good to go. ofc see witch one its on after power button its press
Just cook it! It's already broken.

            Re: Medion mim2300 fan mod

dj_ricoh that is what I was going to do, I already changed the whole circuit (2 fets, 1 diode and 1 capacitor) to make it work.
I was going to bypass the reduction trough the line and get it to the source (in this case its 4.57V) and let it run.
Of course I'll try with a Bios mod, i asked the guys to do it at bios-mods and see will it fix this case.

This laptop ain't to bad, just bad put together. The white line isn't the one that is generating the impulse to let the laptop know is the fan there or not ( i tested it on a spare fan its the same). So all in all, I can bypass the fet reduction and put it at the source or with some isolation from the usb port get the 5V and let it spin like a crazy muchaho.

              Re: Medion mim2300 fan mod

Or you can do a more elegant solution - trick the fan controller to crank up the speed at a lower temperature by changing a resistor. Do you have a schematic?

You can also undervolt the GPU which will make it run LOTS cooler.

                Re: Medion mim2300 fan mod

Well regarding the resistor, sure thing but I will need some kind of explanation on that one (never moded that way just lets say the "brute way").

Undervolt the GPU (like you did on the dv9000) or you think just with SW?
The laptop is fresh reballed, but the temps are killing my eyes. No schematic I had to pay 15$ for them and saw no reason what so ever.

By making it run cooler (the GPU), would make the laptop actually like it was meant to be. If you have some toughts how to do it, I am ready to take any DIY on it .

                  Re: Medion mim2300 fan mod

It isn't doable by software, it'll have to be a hardware mod. Yes, just like i did with the dv9000 (that i'm posting from right now).

If you can post some clear pictures of the board, both front and back, i'll try to help you. A schematic would be helpful but not absolutely required, as we can find all needed information in the datasheet of the controller used for gpu vcore.

                      Re: Medion mim2300 fan mod

I need to know the part numbers of the two multi-pin ICs located above the GPU. U513 and U516 if i see well. By the looks of it U516 seems to be the PWM controller for the vcore supply, but i can't be 100% sure until you post the part numbers.

                        Re: Medion mim2300 fan mod

                        U516 = P2231TF C1, U-FN77A, L-07402
U513 isn't located near the GPU i need to open it.

P2231 = TPS2231, which is an ExpressCard power controller. So it's not what we are looking for. The controller for the GPU Vcore may be on the other side of the board.

Just got an bios update from bios-mods, installed and he enabled CPU thermal configuration (sadly not even that is able to drive the fan).
I'll post pics in few minutes from both sides and details from U513.

Under the GPU is the following picture, and there we have bunch of capacitors. Since i don't have a schematic and got no clue what to look for I'll just post it and await some response when you have time .

In the end I've cut the yellow/white wire and the red (+) and put some straight 5V to the fan. Works a bit loud but hey an 8600GS is now on 50C idle and around 70C on load. The cpu is also under 55C under prime95.
So for a temporary solution not bad.

the white wire needs max 3.3v not 5v.
you could have taken the 3.3v from anywhere
nvm I hope it last and your happy
Just cook it! It's already broken.

The white (in my case yellow) isn't needed at all so its cut off. I only gave the red wire constant 5V for 100% spin.

Hi Senchire. I also tried the same BIOS mod. It doesn't fix the low fan speed. Can you please send some pictures that show how you fix it?
