Ok, at the risk of appearing to be a right nugget which one is the BIOS chip ?

In the good old days they used to have a sticker on them but having just spent 20 minutes going over this m/board & the circuit there's several 8 pin SOIC chips which could be the BIOS. The drawings not a great help either imho
but i have found a device marked ICH9 Boot BIOS on the drawing (but not located it on the motherboard yet.

picture of the mobo will help
usually the bios on cq its covered with white paint around
near the mouse pad connecter(under mouse pad)
          or near memory slot
Just cook it! It's already broken.

Re: Presario CQ61 Dead- Not Booting

            dj_ricoh thanks again.

I have posted some pics (best i can get with current cam) & i guess then we are talking about the U22 on pic 4 . What a sneaky place to put it. Thanks to that self adhesive aluminium coloure'd shield that was on top of it the type numbers have been erased but as long as i can remove.program & replace the same chip i should be ok.

Out of interest someone mentioned an EC chip, what is that ? To me EC means Error Checking ?

            Regards

Re: Presario CQ61 Dead- Not Booting

Not yet, not been able to read/program it.

It seems the chip is a cFEON F80-75HCP SPI chip & the eeprom programmer i use (which was a DIY one) only programs the ATMEL 24C series (i2c) chips.

Looking at he datasheets for the 2 chips they are slightly different in pinout/operation if i read correctly. I think i need something like a Willem programmer. I need to buy a decent programmer anyway so have to see whats available. In the meantime i can't go much further :-(

Just found a nice little circuit for programming these chips via an LPT printer port so will have a crack at that tomorrow & report back then.

No, you're thinking of ECC which stands for Error Checking & Correction \ Error-Correcting Code

                    EC means Embedded Controller.

Re: Presario CQ61 Dead- Not Booting

                        Hi again

Well good -ish news. Managed to reprogram the BIOS chip & re-soldered it (after making a copy first of course). The laptop now fires up with lights everywhere etc & video on the display but now it says 'No serial number entered' so if i have read correctly i now have to reprogram the bios with the serial number ? . I will search on here to see if anyone has covered this before but if anyone wants to advise then that would be appreciated.

Many thanks to those who responded before , especially dj_ricoh who helped with the BIOS file etc.

                        Regards

use HP DMI tools to set up serial number and mainly MAC address on the board

Just a final update on this problem.
Pleased to say it's now back up & running absolutely spot on. Managed to find the DMI tools & entered what was required & my neighbour is now very happy

Thanks to all who helped, much appreciated.

                                Nogger,
                                Heads up from me two!
Had the same problem. Just a few flashes on the side light when power plugged and then nothing!
Rewriting the BIOS solved the problem.
However i didn't manage to write the chip with an LPT circuit. Had to buy a programmer.

                                Many thanks!!!

i'm having the same problem with two cq61 motherboards. Both just turns on white charger led but none powers on. Tried lots of cq61 bios. And even bios chip have same voltages on same pins. Power Button is having 3.3v but doesn't change when pressed.

                                  Anyone with a possible solution?

                                  Thank'yall

Voltage on bios chip, pin 2 is 3v and charge led lights goes off after 10s. Did I need to reprograming bios chip or...? Sorry for my bad english.

Unless both boards are exactly the same, you will need to reprogram the chip.

                                            Hi all,

As the title suggests, how can I be sure that my EC chip is really dead?

I've recently gotten into this hobby of laptop repairs, and have successfully brought back to life a couple with some easy fixes, mostly shorted caps.

Now I'm working on HP Probook 455 G8, that had some "devil" run around on 3V line, burning a bunch of stuff. Luckily I have a dead 455G7 (for spare parts) so I managed to fix it (swapped burned parts) to a point that it will charge (both on barrel jack and usb-c), but it doesn't want to turn on. There is a 3V3 on a keyboard...

                                            Dear all,

                                            My issue is the following:
Tv suddenly started to make Strange things and went out. After disconnecting power and restarting, it tried to start but failed. After each attempt it got worse and worse. Now only the Stdb light is on and it is not booting.

I checked the power supply -> Backlight on when disconnected from mainboard, so I guess Power supply is ok.
Additionally the upper right part of the main-board makes some whistling noise -> probably issue there and therefore issues with booting

Question 1: Where should I start to...
