Advice on reflowing boards (I know there's hundreds of these!)

I appreciate there are plenty of threads like this, but stick with it.

I've been doing a lot of thinking over the last couple of days with regards to reflowing, reballing etc. I have around 120 faulty laptops in stock here, and probably 70-80 of them could benefit from a reflow/reball.

Reballing is way beyond my capabilities at the moment, so I'm mostly thinking about how to get into accurate reflowing.

My problem with reflowing has always been reliability; can a reflow be done in a way that I can confidently sell a laptop to a customer and called it refurbished? I've had success with a PS3 in the oven which lasted 18 months before selling it on, but with the laptops I'm more thinking about purchasing a hot air station with an appropriate nozzle (A post from The Unique suggests a 41mm x 41mm nozzle?), temperature probes and a lot of flux.

Do any of you reflow boards and are happy with the repair as a result? Happy enough to move the boards on as working?

If there's enough positive feedback that reflowing is a serious method of repair, then I'll be looking into investing in a hot air & soldering all in one station hopefully, and I'll then need to find a way to make a pre heater / bottom heater.

Hi artois7, Well you cannot sell laptops with confidence with re-flowed BGA chips for sure: It can fail anytime. Re-balled BGA chips can last little longer than re-flowed ones but still it can fail too. The best way is to replace with new Chip with recommended heat profile. But if you want to experiment a bit and want to train yourself in re-balling (its little time consuming and need hands on skills: which you may get through practice) and learn more about it.

    Cheers

      oven?

and you cant do BGA with a handheld unit - you need a pre-heater under the board.

        The infamous "OVEN"
You better believe it that you need a BGA Station.
Even if the oven got a bad reputation you can still manage to do basic work so you can get work and money for a BGA.
If you think that you can only use small tool and air stations and ovens , bla bla bla NO!
You actually need a BGA Station if you go with this type of work.
Think of it like this. After work you surf FleeBAy and you want to make some side money.
there is a auction for a notebook with video problems and the only person who bid on it its the guys who own a BGA station or have access to it because they need to change that chip. TAM TAM. they win the aucion with 70 GBP and they sell it after with 200 with "seller refurbished" Name.

What would you suggest for a top heater?

That would certainly have enough power... but you need to be able to accurately control it, otherwise you'll toast everything.

I was only assuming, that was what ktmmotocross in his post was using, as I don't think you can get a hot air station on ebay for 30$.
I have a heat gun and a hot air station, but have never attempted even a reflow yet, I acquire many laptops with graphics problems but have to break them up for parts etc

on ebay can buy top and bootom heaters from this stations, cheap and good quality

Seeking Advice: Repairing Dell U3425WE Monitor with Faulty USB-C/Thunderbolt Ports
                            by Borse2008
                            Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice or opinions on what to do with a monitor issue I’ve run into. Apologies in advance is this crossovers a few forum categories.

I have a Dell U3425WE, which I've recently replaced with another model. That said, the original unit is still fully functional in terms of the display — it works perfectly over HDMI and DisplayPort. However, the USB-C and Thunderbolt 4 ports have stopped functioning correctly. The Issue:
                            • The 90W Thunderbolt 4 port (circled in the photo) no longer charges or powers any device, including laptops or MacBooks.
                            • There’s
                            ...

Hi, Im looking to replace some EMP21N03 mosfets on an Alienware motherboard, but I'm having trouble finding a legit supplier. The ones that are available from China have pictures with the engraved logo looking very scratchy and sketchy. Nobody in the US sells them. I'm trying to find a compatible mosfet, but I'm not well versed enough to be confident im making the right choice. Does anyone have a suggestion or advice that could help me find the right mosfet? Thanks!

Gigabyte Eagle 3060 Ti - Boardview / Advice request please
                            by user234
                            Hi all,

Recently installed a new motherboard but during the process I seemed to have damaged my Gigabyte Eagle 3060 Ti card.

My motherboard ROG STRIX B550-A is detecting an issue with the VGA (light ON)

I have attached 2 photo's of my GPU board, one above and the other is what I believe to be the 5V - as you can see, this has visual damage so looks suspicious to me.

If I replace this part what are the odds this will resolve the issue? - any additional information on where to source the parts would be much apricated too!

                            This is...

Advice on rewiring this stepup transformer?
                            by artvandalai
I bought this Chinese made step up transformer to run some 220v appliances. Some of the wires were brittle and broke off. I attempted to improve some of the wiring with spade terminals and heatshrink tubing as the wires were just soldered straight to the connectors. Any advice on how to rewire the broken wires on this step up transformer? I'm unsure how to go about rewiring this to a better safe working condition.

I'm working on an a1707 macbook pro for a friend of mine that said it had stopped working and will not turn back on. After opening up the laptop I discovered a short on C7382 which took the PPBUS_HS_CPU to gorund.
After fixing the cap issue, I had 12.6 volts on the line. Not sure what or when something happened, but I am now getting 3.6 to 3.8 volts fluctuating. I was taking some volt readings and I'm not sure if I shorted something or if something else has happened.
At this point, I'm not sure where to start looking for something to fix. Maybe the cpu fried anyway when the PPBUS_HS_CPU...
