Gateway NV78 power LED comes on, fan spins, unresponsive after a few seconds

    Hey gurus,
I have a gateway NV78 with a problem. It can charge a battery. The LED indicator light turns on when you press the power button, the CPU fan will kick on, and that's it. A few seconds later, it goes unresponsive and the fan shuts off, but the LED light will stay blue. If you hold the button down for a few seconds, the light will turn off. No response from screen or any key inputs. If I take the heatsink off, the CPU fan will turn on and stay running, so the heat sensor works.
I've tried starting it without ram, without a DVD drive, without an HD, a different CPU, and without the battery, no change, no BIOS post beeps, nothing.

I've read in a few places about this problem, and seen a few solutions, none of which work for me. I've tried the 30 second power reset by holding the button, taking apart the power switch, and starting it upside down.

The last thing I can think of is replacing the CMOS, but I can't ID it. Will post pics shortly, but does anyone have any experience with this or the NV52?

    Thanks,
    Alex

This one unfortunately does not have either of the nvidia or ati options, but the intel GM45 chipset. But it isn't integrated on the CPU, it is soldered onto the MB under the same heat sink as the CPU.

Hi, tried all three, can't find a schematic. I googled it, and looked on elecktrotanya. Where else should I be looking? I've never needed one to repair a lappy before, so it's kind of new to me. MB is Kayfo LA-5021p.

Gave up and bought a MB off ebay for 50 bucks. Up and running now.
