HP DV9700 wont Show BD/DVD Drive

I have a HP DV9700 that wont show the BD/DVD/ in either the Device Manager or MY COMPUTER. I have restored the Hard Drive to the Original HP image and still nothing. I hear that these machines have a known Motherboard problem. Any suggestions?

If i put a DVD into the DVD player I can hear it spin

Tried linux? It might be a software issue.

The drive will automatically spin if a disc is placed in and it's supplied power, so at least that part of the hardware is OK

Does it show in the BIOS? If not, either the controller or the drive has failed.

firstly is this a new drive? if so it needs setting as either master or slave, with some drives it has to be done through firmware or patching the original firmware so the bios see's it.

The HP dv9700 is a laptop. The DVD drive should be SATA so there's no jumpers.

This laptop isn't in the nVidia settlement but some customers believe it should have been. Loosing the DVD is an occasionally mentioned symptom of the failing nVidia chip.

HP Forums: HP Pavilion dv9700 should also be on the list - but it is not even with a NVIDIA 8600 GPU

You may need to chuck it or send the board to a reball/reflow service.

Nope, it's ATA... but indeed there are no jumpers. Those Pioneer drives are pretty crappy, i've had one die on me even though it was hardly ever used, and the replacement i got doesn't sound too healthy either. If everything else works and there are no other issues for example when playing games, i'd just say the drive went out.

a lot of burners are made by manufacturers different to what the label tells you, the following link is for a tool which changed nec/optiarc drives from master to slave,

by the way what make/model is the drive you are trying to get working?
