• Can I modify my MOLEX Power Supply to accept SATA connectors?

I work with closely with an electronics recycling center. I have access to hundreds if not thousands of power supplys from computer CPU's I always go picking through the large boxes looking for ones i can use. Most have only one or two SATA connectors. Not a problem I simply have been buying the adapter and connecting to the Molex to make a SATA power connector.

I am wondering why I cant just cut the ends off some DEAD PSUs that have the SATA connectors on, snip the MOLEX connector on a good PSU and wire the SATA connector in its place? The only problem and question I have is what...

I tried known good CCFL's on monitor 2. and one lights for a couple secs and goes out... the other only half lights.

I have tried the panel on a "test inverter" that I have from a monitor that had a bad LCD and all lamps light.... so im thinking that its prob a bad transformer too. Dam I love this forum. Im not one for waiting... but looks like ill be ordering these from China! LOL...

Any tips on desoldering these buggers?

Hi guys... do want to beat a dead horse, but

I have four of these monitors all doing the same thing. I measured the transformer as you indicated in this post and my readings are:

Monitor 1
A-B =1.19k
C-D = 2.6k

Monitor 2
a-b = 1.16k
c-d = 1.22

Monitor 3
a-b =6.73
c-d = 1.18

monitor 4

a-b=OL
c-d= 1.27

All caps look fine, i even replaced one board...

• Re: Looking for basic guide to PSU troubleshooting

Plain Bill:

I am a newbie to a lot of this technology. I dont know the difference between a SMPS controller , large cap, or a datasheet for the VCC. So I am going to ask for a huge favor and ask that you folks walk me through a power supply test.

I assume when you talk about the large cap...you mean that big capacitor on the board that says 450volts... the one that scares the hell outta me. I know my way around a Digital Multimeter as I have had a fluke for years for the repairs on lawn and garden...

• PROBLEM FIXED HP L1908w Monitors go Black after 2 -10 mins

Alexanna: 1 down 5 to go, you were absolutely correct the solder joints are bad.

One question for ya...it took me a couple hrs to get the first one done, I had to completely disassemble the monitor to repair this solder joint, what is the easiest way to resoler this, in the light cradle or out of the cradle?

I did rip the silicone caps, and during diassembly put it back to gether with an automotive silocone. I read this somwhere.

If you lived closer we have a...

• Looking for basic guide to PSU troubleshooting

I am wondering if someone can point me to a link that has basic troubleshooting of the PSU and what to look for. ie test for continuity on all transistor legs, if its got continuity its good/no good, put the multimeter in the AC Volts mode, test the stby leg and get xx volts ac.....etc

Does this make sense...a basic guide to troubleshooting. I thought I saw one here somewhere but for the life of me i cant find it.

This is such a great forum I have learned so much and saved many monitors from the landfills!I am wondering if someone can point me to a link that

• Re: HP L1908w Monitors go Black after 2 -10 mins

Okay after dissassembling 50 or so monitors I have a better understanding of how they work and the test you asked me to perform. With the original top and bottom lights plugged into the inverter, the screen comes on and goes off within seconds. Using a known good CCFL in the inverter in place of the top panel lights, the monitor continues to operate normally. So tomorrow I will do as you have suggested and check the solder connections on the endcaps. I will post my findings. I will be very happy if I can get these...

• Re: How do i complete circut on CCFL test lamp

FWIW I scored a 2 dell monitors one with the 2 light wide connecter and one with the 3 light connector you speak of. They both have broken LCD screens, but the PSU, inverter and back lights are fine. Of course I had to get my hands on some of the test CCFLs too!

• Looking for side by side High Res Image of CCFL vs LED

Does anyone have a HIGH RESOLUTION Image of a CCFL backlight laying next to a LED backlight...a comparison picture. I am looking for one to explain to customers the difference.

And perhaps if I am really lucky someone has an image of an LED backlit television set, not just the Edgelit televisons.

I get so many questions from people on CCFL, vs LED...and now with the Pre Christmas sales and all the LED hype and CHEAP televisions I am trying to put together some pics for people so they are a little bit more educated why some televisons and monitors sell for 150 bucks...

• Re: How do i complete circut on CCFL test lamp

Thank you Alexanna and Plain Bill. This helps me understand alot. I went to my local recycler and he let me disassemble a complete gaylord of Monitors so I could learn more about them. (he did have a puzzled look on his face why i wanted to do it for free) What a learning experience it was. All the westinghouse monitors are as you stated with the hot wires in one connector. I was able to score a pretty nice Viewsonic that I hopefully can use as a test PSU and inverter.

then there is DELL...the connecters that I saw were...

• How do i complete circut on CCFL test lamp

I built a CCFL tester from a computer mod kit. I can only get my lights i want to test to light half way. I am assuming this is because I have not completed the circut. What/how can i complete the circut? What am I supposed to do with the small black/white wires? Can i put a jumper in them?

I have the desire to relamp a monitor, but need to understand how it works a little bit better before i tackle the job.

Thanks.. This is a great forum!...

• Problem Solved

Problem solved! I am learning that many back light assemblies, PSU, etc are interchangable. I happened to have a V87 19 inch monitor waiting to be recapped... I looked at backlight assy and it was a drop in fit. REassembled and it has been on for the past 4 hours. Now if i can just figure out what fits what, I ll keep this in mind when rummaging through the schools recycable pile!

I have been trying to build an external inverter for testing back lights.. see this thread... no responses.. https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=17723

• Westinghouse LCM-19w4 Vertical Line on LCD Screen

I received this monitor from a school and it would not power up. All the caps were bulged. I did a successful cap replacement, but when i turned it on got this Vertical Line on the Right Hand side of the screen.

The line is constant and is there from the startup process all the way through until the machine is completely booted. My limited repair experience is telling me that this is an LCD panal and is not repairable.

Would you pros agree?

The green and red on the screen are just from the screen saver.

Second question..Would there have...
