Macbook A2289 - backlight problems - have checked a lot already - out of ideas

This is A2289, board 820-01987-A. It came in with the screen not working. We could not see any image on the screen, so we ruled out a backlight issue and instead replaced the panel. The display now comes up, but no backlight.

I didn't see any signs of liquid damage, but there was some odd looking spots around U8400. F8400 has voltage on either side of it, and I have 5v present on R8444 and R8445. I did not have 3.2v at R8442 so I figured U8400 was bad, and I replaced it. After replacement, a brief probe to R8442 showed 3.2v so I assumed I had fixed the device. After reassembly however, there was no backlight. So I pulled the board again and when I checked R8442 there was no voltage. I probed around a bit more and came back to R8442 and then there WAS 3.2v. What the heck? I removed R8442 from the board and checked in resistance mode and the numbers were all over the place - highly irregular. I pulled one of these resistors from another board and installed it, but I'm getting the same thing - intermittent 3.2v on R8442.

What on earth am I missing?

Flux and remove R8442. Power up again and check if the enable voltage is ok @ R8442, pin # 1.

What is the voltage to ground of EDP_BKLT_EN? (without R8442)

The replacement device @ U8400 may need to be fluxed and reflowed to possibly correct solder shorts that are not visible.

With R8442 out, I get varying voltage outputs on EDP_BKLT_EN. Mostly 0 volts, but sometime .2 volts. Just to be completely sure, I removed the U8400, wicked all pads, cleaned and prepped pads - then replaced the U8400. 375c is no too hot for installing IC's like those is it?

Hi everyone - first time poster on here looking to embark on my first repair! Thank you in advance for any help!

My Macbook only turns on when the charger is plugged in and only the trackpad and fans show signs of life. The display, caps lock light and touchbar do not turn on. There was previous liquid damage to the touchbar but after cleaning and drying the laptop was operational for a year without any issues. There doesn't seem to be any sign of liquid damage to the board, at present.

What I have done so far:

        - All of the routine diagnostic methods including...

MacBook Pro A2289 no signs of life except clicking trackpad and charging

        Hi,

I hope this is the correct place to post about this device. I originally posted regarding this on iFixit so see the details from that post below:

"I'm hoping someone can give their opinion on the symptoms I'm seeing before I spend any more time and put money into this. I got this MacBook from a customer and after looking at it they decided they didn't want it.

It doesn't turn on and there's no visual signs of life. I have tried resetting the NVRAM, SMC, power cycling, unplugging the battery, using the charger with the battery unplugged. Removed the...

I have a problem I'm hoping someone can help me with. I have an A2289 MacBook that had some liquid damage. After repairing any areas that had corrosion, I was able to get it to show 20v but only .01a on the multimeter. It was consistent on all ports, however I could not get the MacBook to go into DFU mode. I read that I should refllash U4770 and after grabbing the bin from this site I did just that. After soldering the chip back on the board, now I have DFU mode, but the thing is, it won't revive or restore, giving me the error that the device left the DFU state or something to that effect. The...

so I’ve a2289 with water damage ! In first time other friend have clean and work ! But after some time stop working !
now, I open the MacBook and I see a lot of corrosion near backlight circuit (I attach some photos about that ) I think the problem is on backlight maybe bcs do strange boot then reboot (attach video ) I change some thing on the circuit like :
        q8400
        q8401
        D8410
        and the resistor R8431

        if I check PPVIN SOSW LCDBKLT_R I’ve 12,9v

        MacBook Pro A2289 No Power
        by jasonr2000
hi guys I have a 2020 MacBook Pro A2289 it has the i5 CPU and is now acting as if its dead,

when I plug in the charger cable with a volt meter thing connected as well its drawing 20.3v and 1.11A

if I press the power button nothing happens.

but if I hold the power button for 7 seconds or more the voltmeter drops all the amps down to 0.00A but voltage stays the same.

any ideas where I can check ??

from what I can gather it must be charging the battery at 1.11A as nothing happens when the power button is pressed. I can successfully...
