Thermal ticket printer repair, doesn’t detect paper, optical sensor

This is from a professional scale RM-50 EL(M5), Gram Precision brand. It always complained out of paper.

There's a small optical sensor at paper path that detects it. It's a reflective sensor consisting of an IR LED plus a phototransistor. It detects anything white at 1mm distance.

First I thought that it was just dirtiness (it's from a butcher shop), but cleaning didn't improve. I made a bridge between phototransistor Emitter and Collector to defeat paper sensing while the replacement gets here.

After a lot of research, I deducted that original sensor was a Panasonic CNB10010xL (CNB10010SL for instance). While this sensor is obsolete, I found that Fairchild QRE1113GR is highly compatible. The only difference is flat corner placement in package.

Today I've changed it and it works OK.

probably a weak led. you could have checked that with your phone camera.

Man, believe it or not, I tried that to no avail. I couldn’t deduct if the bad part was the LED or the phototransistor. With original bad sensor, I tried:

      1) "Shoot" IR light directly to the phototransistor from a remote control. No reaction at output.
      2) Tried to see IR light with a camera. Nothing.

Now, after replacement, I’ve tried the second thing again. Nothing at all. Perhaps the light is so faint that it can’t be detected by phone camera. It can see other IR light, like remote controls, but I never use it for diagnosing remotes.

maybe the led is focussed to a sharp point in a specific direction.

Do you have a schematic to the printer? Are you getting a 0.7 voltage drop on the anode cathode of the photo optic IC? This will tell you in which side the problem is. What are the symptoms of the printer?

Thanks keeney, but the problem is already solved by replacing the photo sensor with an equivalent. The printer is already assembled and ready to return to customer. I won’t do further checks.

The symptom is described in thread title: "doesn’t detect paper", always says "out of paper" error. I made a bridge between phototransistor E & C, and the customed used it for two weeks until I got the replacement sensor. I told them to everyday check the paper reel so it didn’t run out of it and force the feed gears.

Sensor on Aurora AS1018CD paper shredder doesn't work
              by CapSnap123
I'm getting frustrated troubleshooting a paper shredder. The way the shredder normally works is when you turn the power on, nothing happens until you insert a piece of paper. There is an IR shredder in the shredder and inserting the paper breaks the beam and starts the shredder motor. But now the motor runs constantly, even when no paper is inserted. I've replaced the photodiode and the IR emitter. Also the relay makes a nice clicking sound so I assume it is working too. I don't know what else to check. Here's a photo of the circuit board. The red and black wires marked IR - go to the...

Apple Macbook Pro A2338 EMC8162 lid sensor doesn't work
              by veedo
I have an Macbook Pro A2338 after small liquid damage, all working fine but keyboard was sticky so I have replaced palmrest for genuine second hand and now lid sensor doesn't recognize when I'm closing the lid. Display is always on, can't find sensor for that model, can someone explain my how does it work, where that flex is if there is any.

Maybe that the motherboard issue, not sure where to start.

              Thank You

AcuRite 5 in 1 temperature sensor replacement repair
              by CapLeaker
              Got a new victim:

AcuRite 5 in 1 Iris outdoor weather station not updating the temperature / humidity anymore. The original sensor is a SHT21. Also there are identical other sensor manufacturers. I chose the HTU21D to replace the original SHT21. Both have identical specs. I've had two failure modes with these sensors.
A: outside temp stuck at -40? It's cold here at times in Canada, but not that cold!
B: stuck at some temperature and maybe updating once in 12 hrs or so.

Easy solution is to go to AcuRite website and purchase the sensor. Right?...

Anycubic Photon 5.5 3D printer 25Q32 flashrom dump needed
              by re-atari
Hello all, as the title says, I'm very much in need of a valid firmware dump of a Anycubic Photon 5.5 3D resin printer. It's stored in a Winbond 25Q32, so it's 4Mbyte.

Here's a little background for my request. A few weeks ago I bought this 3D printer from a guy who had moved on to a PLA printer. I got it at a vey reasonable price, as it was in a defective state. The seller told me that he had experienced a power failure during a firmware upgrade, after which the printer appeared to be dead. He thought the firmware was corrupted in such a way that the printer was now bricked. As he...

HP Officejet Pro 8620 Printer (Doesn’t print due to “failed or missing print head”)
              by L3git
Hi all, first I'd like to say thank you for taking the time out of your day to help me. So I have this HP Officejet Pro 8620 Printer that doesn't want to print at all. Once I turned the printer on I'm given this message “the print head appears to be missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed. Error Code: 0xc19a0013.” I was wondering if it's still worth repairing and if so what can I do to fix it? I've attached pictures of the message and the printer itself. Thank you again!...
