    PS3 and 34XBR960

    I recently bought a PS3 and slammed a 750GB HDD in it. I just got home yesterday and finally got to hook it up and I couldn't be happier, it's a slick little system and Uncharted 3 is dope (too bad the beta ends today!)

    It looks fantastic on the Panny plasma downstairs. Unfortunately, my Sony 34XBR960 HD tube doesn't seem to like the new PS3 as much as I do. I get a black screen through HDMI. I remember it also didn't like my old Philips upconverting DVD player through HDMI before I got an LG blu-ray. I think it might be an HDCP issue.

    Any suggestions? Or should I start saving for a 50" Panasonic 1080p plasma?

    A little research might give you the answer. Your idea of an HDCP issue is logical. The service manual is available at Elektrotanya. I have seen instructions for updating HDCP information on other TVs, but I've never dealt with this model.

    Instead of saving up for a 50" Panasonic, how about saving up for this one? It should give you bragging rights for quite some time.

      Output 1080I limitation?

        I doubt HDCP is active while playing games, think its only active while watching blueray? Dont quote me on that though but seems not needed to have HDCP while playing games to me.

          Blue ray can output 1080P. I think that model can not play 1080P. It is limited to HD in 1080I or below. I don't know what your set up is but most blue ray machines are switchable between the both formats.

          I do not think there is any copy protection problem. If you know how to switch the PLAYER to 1080I or below, it would be worth the attempt.

            Came to think of something related that might be of use to you. I had a friend with a manual HDMI switch that was only working reliably for one monitor and not the other (2 port switch). Turned out my friend had bought cheapo HDMI cables and they were actually not fitting snugly enough to make good contact. Sure is a long-shot but would be quite easy to borrow the cable from downstairs if you didnt use the same one.

            I however thing like the others that your TV and PS3 dont get along due to some miss-communication about resolution your TV is capable of. Set it up for 720p and see if that makes the picture show.

              You guys are correct, my set supports 720p and 1080i. No 1080p.

              I set the PS3 for 480p and I still had the same problem, sound but no video. I'm using the same cable upstairs and downstairs, the Panny has no problem but the Sony just isn't having it.

              I bought a component cable and it works, but the picture quality is a far cry from the tact sharp plasma downstairs. For the first time ever, my big Sony tube let me down. I'm so dissapointed with the image quality that I think the component cable is going back to Fry's and when I get back home for good in August I'm going to start looking for a cheap broken LCD/Plasma on Craigslist to fix.

                I scoured the service manual and there's no mention of HDCP anywhere. Thanks for the link anyway PlainBill, that is great to have.

                Google shows that a lot of people have had issues with the HDMI on this TV acting funny. Apparently the fix is to replace the board that has the HDMI plug on it. No thanks.
