    USB flash drive doesn't register

I've got a customer who brought in a Sandisk flash drive which does not register , or even show up in diskpart. I disassembled it hoping for a shorted cap or something but they all seem fine. I'm assuming it is a problem with the memory controller or nand itself. If I get another one of these and swap out the nand to the good one, will that work?

what if you just bought another 16GB drive and handed it to your customer?
Chances are it's not worth it to repair, unless the point is data recovery, and then you can't just swap out the memory array?

check or bypass the polyfuse - i have seen those fail
btw, your only dealing with the controller & it's associated bits,
it will show on the pc even with a dead or missing flash if the controller is good.

btw, i'm buying 64g usb3 sticks for about $4 with a 5year warranty - unless your recovering data they arent worth fixing

I should have been more clear. The purpose is data recovery.

There doesn't appear to be any voltage on the board when inserted.

Yes it's for data recovery. Which flash drives do you like?

update - I was just checking VCC with my multimeter and when I do, the led lights up and the board becomes warm - still not showing up though.

resolder everything and put a jumper over the polyfuse.
then consider replacing the usb plug.

i'v had the contacts become bad on those plugs after a lot of use.

i choose drives based on looks and price - i doubt there is much difference internally.
my latest purchase was a few of these:

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!! I found the VCC pad torn off the board. I jumped it to the back side of the poly fuse and BAM!

              Thanks all!
