Well I built this pc several years back and it was awesome until the day the ex decided to use it for the first time. Withing 15 seconds there was smoke, fire and several small explosions from the power supply.. A top of the line enermax..Obviously it wasnt her fault..however I was so Irritated i just stuck it in storage.
I recently got it out of storage and decided to check the damage. I pulled every component and tested them all in another Pc.. hard drives operate, rams good, video card ok, sound card operates and the processor is fine.
So i was given a new 22" monitor at Christmas and picked up a new BFG gx series 550w power supply two days ago.
I think this is where i screwed the pooche.. When i installed the new power supply I accidentally connected the 4 pin connector that's attached along with the 20 pin main board connector to the 4pin socket for the cpu. I turned the computer on and nothing.. I quickly saw my mistake and attached the correct ATX cable. And the computer started up however...
The system acted a little buggy at first the fans kept going after first shut down.. Also had a couple instances of the bios resetting after i shut the pc off. And one instance of a message for the video card saying it was not getting sufficient power. System time errors etc.
Then the computer seemed to be operating fine last night for several hours when it just shut down.. Wouldn't reboot..
No post, no beeps, no fans, nothing but the green board light. When I unplug the 4pin molex for cpu power the fans turn but that's it. When i plug it back in And try and power up the protection circuit on the power supply trips.
Ive completely removed the board from the case and check for shorting on the post. I couldn't see anything. I also visually inspected the board for bulging caps and what not and didn't find any. Which probably doesn't mean anything from what im reading about here today.
Pulled the processor and checked in another computer and it operates fine.
I have also removed all components including ram and tried trouble shooting the problem one piece at a time, several times with no luck.
I also replaced the cmos battery which was even functioning at 1v when i tested it.
In addition I have tested with a multi meter the power supply and all rails appear to be functioning normally.
So at this point I've looked online for a new socket478 board that compares with little luck. Maybe im looking in the wrong place.
Id love to keep the board and replace the caps if thats all that is wrong with it.
I can also take some magnified pics and post them if that would help things out.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.. thanks for your time.
