Re: E-machine T2040
Agree. If it has a bestec (worstec) PSU, replace it or re-cap it as it will take the board out if it hasn't done so already.I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!
No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

Re: E-machine T2040
Welcome to the forum.
Is that reddish color from your camera lighting/flash or is that something else?
Looks like you have lots of bulging capacitors there. What kind of power supply does it have (brand and model number)? The power supply might be the deciding factor in whether or not you want to recap the mother board.Old proverb say.........If you shoot at nothing, you will hit nothing (George Henry 10-14-11)Comment

By the way, what is the brand of the failed caps? Seems like TMS (a.k.a. Total Monkey Shit) but I can't tell from the photos.Comment

Re: E-machine T2040
PSU is Bestec ATX-250-12E. Tried recapping mobo, but the new solder would not take to the mobo. The computer was left out in the "barn" for a while.
I trash the mobo. The CPU and ram seem to have survived the abuse. I will be checking the PSU today.
The red is on the caps. Some type of corrosion, I believe.

You guessed right. TMS 105C 6.3v 1500ufComment

With that said, don't use this power supply on any motherboard, ever. Use it for parts only (fan, wires, coils, and the 200v primary capacitors).

Also try putting a little bit of solder on the tip before soldering. This should improve heat transfer.
When you recap the motherboard, try it with a different power supply. There is still a chance that it will work.
By the way, what brand and series of capacitors are you using as the replacements?Last edited by momaka; 11-30-2009, 12:44 PM.Comment

Re: E-machine T2040
I use 2 irons, one 30w and one switchable 35, 50. Niether would work. Solder other boards with no problem. It is just this board.
I replace with Rubycon, when I can.

Re: E-machine T2040
You could send it to Topcat and he could re-cap it for you. I agree with momaka about the PSU. There are more problems with the Worstec ATX-250 rev. 12E than the caps, so either toss it out or use it for parts.I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

Re: E-machine T2040
The only eMachines that survive are the ones where the motherboard caps go before the Bestec caps do--providing the service person knows which Bestec must be taken out of service even if they still work.Comment

by momakaHere’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.
So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

by momakaI've been seeing a lot of cheap-looking (but not always so cheap) no-name AGP video cards on eBay for a while. They started popping up quite a bit when the market for AGP cards became more alive all of a sudden due to interest in “retro” PCs. One thing that struck me about these cheapo cards is that they almost always seem to come with garbage caps - including the abominable Sacon FZ. That aside, though, I've been wondering about the rest of the quality (or lack of?) on these cards. So I decided to satisfy my curiosity yet again.
This one was actually suggested to me by ChaosLegionnaire.... -

by FoetussHi all
Hope this is in the correct place.
I'm planning on recapping both motherboards. I actually already ordered recplament caps for them, where I will be changing out most for poly's.
Could use some double checking to see if I'm not doing something stupid.
Pictures of the boards are attached.
What I will be replacing with what : (planned)

Got 4 CCFL 16/10 monitors for free.
The resolution is almost Full HD (1680x1050)
VGA Input only is a bummer though.
Uses cheap TN panel with terrible viewing angles.
Even though this is not 17" 5:4 screen, still has very low resell value here. Can be found for 15-20 euros.
All the 4 monitors were not working and needed psu recap. Used mix of mediocre / junk caps to recap them, then donated 3 of them to friends/relatives and kept 1 for myself. Also like to install extra caps on empty spaces to help them last longer.
